I agree that the documentation can often be lacking. But I beat up my favorite search engine and find more than just the base documentation. StackOverflow is one of my favorite websites for this.

I'll go to stackoverflow if I need to, but I'd rather avoid it. Too many times, the people there fail to Check Their Ego At The Door before posting. Or they'll curtly tell me to RTFM.

I think when faced with a manager or a leader who refuses to help or guide or lead, just do something, anything, that could help the project at hand. If they complain that you did the wrong thing, tough shit. "Hey, I asked. This looked like it needed doing, so I did it." Or, if you want to avoid duplicating someone's efforts, ask, "Hey, is anyone working on a custom yum plugin to do $X?" and if you don't get protests, go for it.

Can you get the additional information you need from someone else who also reports to your tech lead?

Not an option. The tech lead/architect and I are the only two on the project. And our boss is too busy with meetings.

The tech lead's way of doing things is to search online via Google. I'd rather have someone give me the info instead of looking for it online. I'd be wasting too much time looking online, and since usage is monitored, I'm afraid I'll be reprimanded for spending too much time websurfing and not enough time coding.

Also, the tech lead's way of doing things is to DIY. If he needs a CPAN module, he just installs it. In my experience, I'd have to submit a request to have it done by the system team. If I tried to do it myself, I'd be reprimanded for overstepping my boundaries.

Apparently he never encountered a Gretchen Phillips or a Gary Grimes in his career as a programmer.
