So. As some of you may have noticed, Reeve has a tiny problem.. If you consider terminal diseases "tiny."
During the Major's assault, Reeve got chomped on by a creature from the Underground that the Major was keeping cooped up. The bite and resulting infection lowered his immune system enough that the latent Jenova cells in his blood stream spotted an opportunity and took it. So, what happens when the Jenova cells in your blood are trying to make you crazy and your body's fighting back with everything its got? Everyone's favorite crazy alien disease, geostigma~!
But as we all know, the most fun part of any disease is the opportunity for infection. And unfortunately for Reeve, geostigma is contagious. He's holed himself up, but he didn't catch it early enough. As a result, anyone who's been near Reeve (or near someone who's been near Reeve) since the 24th? May have been exposed. And since Reeve works at the Lux, let's just say that's a lot of people.
Which brings us back to the torturing mini-plot!
There's an epidemic sweeping the City, and you're invited! Anyone who'd like to infect their character with the stigma, guaranteeing them pain, paralysis and almost certain death. Because of the limited number of Jenova cells in the City, the disease will be spreading and progressing somewhat slower than usual, but still fiercely. All the cool kids are doing it!
Geostigma is caused when Jenova cells infest a body and the body fights back, overcompensating to defeat the intruders. As with any disease, some people have natural resistances and immunities, so it tends to target the young, old, or infirm, especially those with weakened immune systems.
The disease is characterized by a black, scar-like rash that appears on the body. The rash is incredibly painful and weeps black pus, which stains anything you use to cover it. Unless it's kept covered, it's highly contagious. However, infection can be avoided by keeping the wounds covered and washing your hands after touching an infected person.
Eventually, the spreads over the body, becoming so rigid and painful that the victim is incapable of moving and must be confined to a wheel chair. Eventually, even breathing is so painful that eventually the victim suffocates to death.
SEE! IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE.
Geostigma is highly contagious. Rashes and wounds left uncovered weep a thick black pus that if touched (Or, Zen pointed out, licked or ingested) is almost certain to infect. Swimming in the same water as someone with a rash is also a Very Bad Idea. Generally, geostigma cannot travel through the air, but if a wound is left uncovered or someone's in close proximity to one, it can.
Anyone with a suppressed or very weak immune system might notice an almost compulsive urge to shack up with other infected individuals, follow Cloud around, set small towns on fire and shove swords through people, but these symptoms are rare and are generally not life threatening.
Participation and infection are, of course, completely voluntary, but anyone who wants to infect their babies. And if anyone wants their characters involved without infecting them, there will be plenty of opportunities for care and cure-devising. We can do it if we all work together!
