einsteins dreams - alan lightman
lighthousekeeping - jeanette winterson
white oleander - janet finch
she - saul williams

quotes:

she realised that the only war worth fighting was the one that raged within; the rest were all diversions. home was not a place for the faint hearted. only the very brave could live with themselves.

I just got The World and Other Places today, so it's so strange to me that you quoted it while I am about to start it. I miss you darling, that photograph is beautiful.

You have been telling me to read Einstein's Dreams for years, and I still haven't yet! You must yell at me sometime.

To burn always with this hard, gem-like flame, to maintain this ecstasy, is success in life Pater, The Renaissance

I look for myself but find no one. I belong to the chrysanthemum hour of bright flowers placed in tall vases. I should make an ornament of my soul.

I do not know which particular magnificent details I would choose to define the essence of my spirit. Doubtless I love the decorative because I sense in it something that resembles the substance of my soul Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

What life was there, was mine,

now and again to lay
one hand on a warm brick

and touch the sun's ghost
with economical joy,

now and again to name
over the bare necessities

Rich, from Necessities of Life

Oh, you. I cannot send any poetry or quotes your way because most of mine come from you and Alisha.

the first quote I posted, I remember not paying attention to the lecture I was in, and then hearing it and rushing to write it down thinking I had to tell you about it at some point.

You will find many quotes and glorious poetry within the books of Anne Sexton.

Suggested reading:

Play It As She Lays- Joan Didion
The Unbearable Lightness of Being- Milan Kundera
Cannery Row- John Steinbeck
Any book by Ray Carver

In eighth grade I tried to read The Pearl by Steinbeck but I just couldn't do it and I was convinced I absolutely despied him; however, I just finished The Grapes of Wrath and I found that I liked him so much more this time around. I will have to remember to read Cannery Row.

And have you read The Joke by M. Kundera? I have a copy but have never read it.
