Wow, I had intended to keep more current here, and it's been six months since I last did an entry. My apologies, and I will try to keep things at least weekly going forward.
LJ likes to default you into rich text mode instead of HTML if you're in the browser updating, I think (RIP LJ clients). So you need to make sure you click out of that, but the markup language is still the same.
Had been staring at my address book wondering if I should send a postcard or two and then thought "nah." Good instincts! If this is a permanent-ish move you can send your new address and I can update my address book.
I recall you also wanting to pick my brain about solarpunk stuff, and I also recall this being via private message on DreamWidth. I have those disabled for the time being, so if this was a thing you were still interested in doing, we can work out some other form of communication on the topic.
>>Most of my concentration at this point is on trying to get people really *enlisted* in Solarpunk Portland. I've got sixty subscribers on the server, and zero project managers. Two people initially volunteered, discovered the job was bigger than they thought it was, and downgraded themselves. I'm disappointed that the world happens to be shaped that way, but it is their decison to make, they made it, and I get to live with it.<<
Could you break it down into smaller chunks and find volunteers for at least some of those? It's easier to do 80% of the work than 100%, even if you originally wanted to hand off 75% to three other people. In particular, look at your people and see if you can identify their passions. If someone is learning a type of code that your website uses, or is hyped about solar panels, they could be in charge of that one thing.
>>So I came up with an idea. Here's a neat toy:... )
* Less obviously solar because they're opaque, but still using the heat sink method, are things like keyhole gardens and walled gardens. Russia used fruit trenches to grow citrus.
* Solar ovens come in many styles, and will cook a surprising range of food. You can DIY a solar oven from a cardboard box and aluminum foil. If you can use tin snips, you can make one from craft metal. Or you can buy a fancier model.
* Do all your peeps have a solar firestarter? Nothing sucks like being in the wilderness or a blackout with no way to spark a fire. Most models for sale use the mirror method, but a magnifier will also work. You can also make your ownIf you can get people doing small projects, and encourage them to post what they're doing, that lays a good foundation for competition. Usually someone will want to do "bigger, better" stuff and someone else wants to beat them -- and they're off. \o

Im really glad you are doing ok. When you stopped replying to google hangout i thought something was wrong with you! Theyve changed the app to something similar. I'll let you know via email. I think you're right btw. Survival is the utmost on people's minds. Adjusting your expectations of people is a smart move. I'll look at the link later when i shouldn't actually be asleep. Lol! Hugs!
Btw i really hope you give the volunteer organization i told you about in Portland a chance. They could really use a mind like yours. They have a model of taking their volunteers as they are and they really know how to break things down into tasks that the least educated can handle. I'll remind you of their contact information if you want.
What I'm currently trying to do is get off the hanster wheel of car insurance... repairing the car i really can't afford and not being trapped at home without a car. What ive realized is i either have to walk with a disability or get an electric bicycle (or rather an adult tricycle) with a disability . Neither of which will work in syracuse winters. Maybe you could help me with this idea? I could really use a sounding board when and if you have the time. Kaaren
