i never understood claims that sea levels were rising. the presumption is that global warming = melting ice caps = higher oceans but water contracts when it melts...

the antarctic ice cap is, in many places, a mile deep. if it were reduced in height by even 10%, the effect across the oceans, even though the water volume would be diminished by melting, would be to raise sea levels substantially. Even an increase of six foot would be enough to submerge several populated island, and cause extensive flooding in cities built on ocean shores.
Of course, the melting is not simply a vertical mass issue ... the perimeter of the ice cap is shrinking as areas of glacial flow that extend beyond the land mass break off and float away.
The process may be slow, but such things can be pretty inexorable once they begin. Reversing effects on the climate would take decades to arrest, let alone reverse.

I wanted to apologize for a while now. there isn't much to say, how I acted was inappropriate and that's about all there is to it. I don't expect you to be comfortable to start talking to me again or anything (as that's probably a can of worms for you), however I still wanted to apologize for my misbehavior, and hope it is acceptable in your eyes.
