Formulaic. (Dark, dreary and, well, we don't have a shortage of crime authors doing exactly that. The lead actress playing Wallander's daughter actually took her life, IIRC. Wallander might be better than Van Veeteren or the "new" Beck, to name the two main contenders for Scandinavian Crime Angst, but to me that's like arguing what's the best Star Trek Enterprise Season, I honestly don't care.)

The lead actor is rather good, my Dad knows him slightly, but it is not my cup of tea. I'd probably like the BBC version better just because it'd be fun to see how they do names.

I saw the commercials for it last night and, not knowing it was based on books, thought of it as simply another BBC British mystery series set in, well, Britain.
