Matt Stern, you should comment on this entry with five 80's synth pop albums that I must listen to, that are neither too dark nor too poppy. I'm a layperson, after all.

Awesome picks - it might be too obvious a choice for your list, but I would also add "Clues" by Robert Palmer. Some of his best songs, I think, with appearances by Gary Numan and a Beatles cover - it's the perfect album!
