Reminder to self

Accept failure as a normal part of living. View it as part of the process of exploring your world; make a note of its lessons and move on.

No matter how many mistakes we make we have to keep on trying.

I've never liked to use the word 'failure'. It's so negative and makes people feel bad. Personally I prefer 'unsuccessful'. I never told the boys they had failed, always that they tried and were unsuccessful and could try again or just learn from it. That's just me, though :-)

Wellllll...that's just semantics since they essentially mean the same thing.
Perhaps failure does sound harsher but not having success has the same consequences. I guess I was looking more at the spirit of what is being said here than the sense of the word. For me there is nothing disgraceful in admitting that I failed at something as long as I know I can pick myself up, dust myself off and try again.

Hehe, there has to be a word for not achieving a goal but failure, in regards to us humans, isn't in my vocabulary :-) I don't actually agree that the consequences are the same as telling someone they've failed because the emotions tied up with the word 'failure' are often greater than if it's put another way. I think a positive spin and less emotive word can make all the difference to a person's confidence. There's absolutely nothing wrong in failure itself, though, and it can make people stronger for it, as the quote suggests :-)

I'm definitely with Holly on this one... semantics or not, it sounds so much better her way! :^)

Humane are fallable, this is true. Hard to swallow sometimes when it's unfairly thrown in our faces though.

I'm thinking this doesn't mean an unfair sort of failing but something we are responsible for personally. our own actions or thoughts, perhaps.

When I was growing up, my dad liked to tell me of all these famous scientists who failed a million times before they finally made their discoveries that would change the world.

Yes, exactly right. And whether it's called failure or lack of success, it shouldn't stop us.

Coincidentally, saw an article talking about how being wrong is one of the things that helps humans be right -- provided we can learn from our mistakes. Might have to check out that book.
