Night Terrors

Well, that was... an episode written by Mark Gatiss.

The good: Scary dolls? Tick. Lovely 'the Doctor will come and rescue you if you are a scared little kid' premise? Tick. Amy and Rory being awesomecakes? Tickety-tick.

But I am kind of bored of the MARK GATISS'S DADDY ISSUES LET ME SHOW YOU THEM programme.  I mean, it's not Idiot's Lantern level of crass in the whys and wherefores, but only because it's less literal (the huggy saving the day works better if you, um, I don't know, DON'T have  a scene at the end where the Dad still clearly does not think of the kid as his son, ffs) - and otherwise this has all the same sluggish pacing problems. And a sad old lady who is, um, not looked after very well by the story.  And the Doctor is weirdly twatty and blah and unfunny. And oh look, spooky twins, yawn.

I dunno, maybe my head is extra-tuned to 'where the fuck are all the women in anything ever', but you know what I don't need? Another touching story of a wee boy reunited with his papa (while his mum is conveniently out so there aren't too many icky girl parts nearby).  YES, MY ISSUES LET ME SHOW YOU THEM I KNOW I KNOW.  But it's a story about a FUCKING DOLL'S HOUSE and you still managed to make it about a boy. Well done everyone.

On the upside, there is something really super-intriguing and yay going on with all the dying and regenerating, though, isn't there? Is Rory going to have died 12 times by the end of this year? And I want to be squicked about Amy's constant transformations (the Teselecta Amy, dolly Amy, next-weeky Amy...um...are there others? heh, obvs there is plastic Amy as well - and Leadworth pregnant Amy's Choice Amy...) as some typically fucked up skiffy approach to pregnancy and the wimmins - but I'm hoping it's something cool to do with regeneration and timey-wimeys and River saving the Doctor. Really really please.  (I HAVE NOT READ ANY SPOILERS FOR THIS YEAR: PLS DO NOT BE TELLING ME ANY.)

Anyway, I did like the doll's housey stuff - the bit when Purcell got transformed proper proper yelp-out-loud scared me - and the 'it's a doll's house' clues were nicely worked. And, um. Next week looks good? Sigh.
Also: LJ, stop making it completely impossible to edit posts, maybe? Ta.
