Hmm, I decided to watch Star Trek Into Darkness to see if it held up any better - I'd spent much of my time in the theatre actively annoyed at the stealing from Wrath of Khan. It actually is much worse without the distraction of anger, because this time around I was able to notice even more plotholes and clunky writing. It seemed like the movie ( Read more... )

Reading this, I think JJ Abrams sees entertainment as mostly action and interaction between characters. Story seems to be the least of his worries. I can't deny his success. But his product just doesn't appeal to me. I try to give it a fair viewing, but it always seems to fail me in story and detail. I'm not at all surprised you see the same kinds of weaknesses in his second Star Trek that drove me crazy in the first. I'm not looking forward to Star Wars VII with any hope.

It is worrying to think what he'll do with Star Wars. I was thinking about his take on Spielberg with Super 8, which worked on some levels but also very much did not. It's like he knows his history and his references are impeccable but he doesn't understand the deeper meaning.
