So, The Eleventh Hour...

Apr 06, 2010 09:24

A day late and a dollar (pound?) short, but it won't be a surprise to anyone who knows me that I loved The Eleventh Hour to death. Christopher Eccleston had me at "Run!", David Tennant convinced me somewhere in the middle of School Reunion, and Matt Smith?

Smith had me with "And she left you all alone!?", and the entire scene which followed. I wouldn't want to have been Amelia's aunt, had she chosen that moment to walk through the door.

Karen Gillan's role is an intriguing one, too. Not since Ace have we had a companion with real "issues", and I'm seeing a hint of a parallel between Seven 'n' Ace and Eleven 'n' Amy, which I'll discuss in a moment.

Someone else used the word "fey" to describe Amy, and I think that's a perfect adjective (in the sense of "marked by an otherworldly air or attitude, and a bit mad"... hopefully not in the Scottish sense of "marked by a foreboding of death or calamity"). My interest in the character ratcheted up another notch during the rewatch, when I realized that Little Amelia had gone through four different psychiatrists not because she kept fighting them, but because she kept biting them. Poor Amy-- all grown up on the outside; still a wounded little orphan girl on the inside. Did her parents also tell her that they'd "be back in five minutes-- promise!" before disappearing forever? I'll lay odds on it.

Now, about the series arc. One of my niggles with the episode was the Sledgehammer of Foreshadowing (TM), which I had sincerely hoped that Rusty would take with him when he left.

"The Panoptica will open! Silence will fall!!"

Yes, okay, we got it. Thank you so much for the clue-by-four.

Not six hours after I'd grumbled at that scene, someone more obsessed observant than myself screencapped Rory's hospital pass. The one which clearly says that it was issued in 1990. As he was busy taking photos with his SMARTPHONE. Hello!

There was an initial flurry of "OMG how could they have let such an obvious gaffe get onto the screen!?". My response? C'mon, people... this is Teh Moff. No way was that an editing mistake... especially given that the camera zoomed in right to it, and that kiss-a-grams are also a very 1990's thing. What our new executive producer and head writer has done is given us a series arc for the kiddies and the casual crowd (Silence will fall!!), and another one for the people who examine screencaps of TV characters' hospital passes-- in other words, the batshit crazy fans. Speaking as a batshit crazy fan, I approve of this plan. A great deal, in fact. :-)

And now I'll add my own little snippet, since I haven't seen this one mentioned yet. A few people have noticed the scanner/oscilloscope thingie in the TARDIS, which appears to be showing the crack in Amy's wall. Attention is drawn to it because of a rather noticeable flash of light when the Doctor turns it off. What's even more interesting to me is the scene taking place around it, as Amy asks why the Doctor has chosen to ask her, of all people, along.

Amy: You're lonely. That's it? Just that?

The Doctor: Just that.

He steps in front of the scanner displaying a graphic of Amy's cracked wall-- it's prominently displayed in the background, and in perfect focus.

The Doctor: Promise.

Amy makes her decision to come along.

Amy: Okay.

Amy turns away, and the Doctor's eyes slide immediately to the scanner, which he quickly turns off and taps a couple of times.

Ominous? Uh, yeah, a bit. Seven 'n' Ace fans will probably see why.

Loving it? You bet I am. Is it next Saturday yet?
