Yeah, the whole debacle over there is real classy. *insert irony here* My favorite is where the comments start asserting that Stacie doesn't even exist and the whole auction is a scam. *headdesk* But from what I've seen, media fandoms are typically cooler about fanfic than literary fandoms. (I'm making broad generalizations here. I'm sure there are exceptions that I'm not aware of.) Possibly because they aren't competing in the same market, television vs. written word? Who knows.
Anyway, that post was definitely not one of Gabaldon's better moves. Further down in the comments someone points out Anne Bishop and the way she handles fanfic-ers. Turns out, most of the time all you have to do is ask nicely and your fans will respect your wishes. And to definitely not do what Gabaldon did.
My favorite part is the bit about how I am PRACTICALLY A RAPIST OMG! because I write fanfic. Wow, I hadn't realized that! I'd better stop writing RIGHT NOW! :-/
Yeah, way to take something that your fans see as an act of love and completely demonize it with wild hysterics and an out-sized sense of entitlement. If she tried to alienate half her fans on purpose, I'm not sure she could have done better than she did right there. But it seems she has seen a glimmer of the light. She's now done a follow-up post, if you haven't seen it, backing away from the bleeding edge... somewhat.
Yup... saw that. Interested in what the promised follow-up to the follow-up will have to say. Especially since several responses to the first follow-up point out that she hasn't actually bothered to apologize for calling people who write fic (in fandoms where it's perfectly accepted) burglars and sex offenders. And, er, rosebush defacers. O_o
I wonder if she realises how much harm she's done herself as a result - even among her fans. The wank's spread far and wide over this, even to places like the Smart Bitches website which (I believe) generally only discussed published fiction (and one commenter on that site made a parody video of Gabaldon's rant). Gabaldon's made herself look like an idiot, and her lack of apology is definitely noticed.
And assuming the Support Stacie people take her up on those books, I can't help wondering if anyone would actually bid on them now... ;)

Face, meet desk. Fixed now, with apologies.
