Yes, encouraging. Especially, I think, because these proceedings happened in a federal court and are setting precedent in regards to how the laws are interpreted. Or am I being to optimistic here?

I'm not going to be cynical this time - I'm going to hope that the ruling survives upon appeal. Certainly Justices Scalia, Alito, Thomas and Roberts will vote to overturn. I expect that Ginsberg, Sotomayor and Kagan will vote to uphold. The question is how Breyer and Kennedy will vote.

Whatever the outcome, the decision makes for very interesting reading with regard to being a building block of civil rights philosophy. Akin to King's letter from a Birmingham jail in my opinion.
