Recently, I was asked by an acquaintance why I so boldly assert that I do not feel that Sarah Brightman should be considered Classical music

A classical singer knows his or her genre and knows not to cross over. You'd never hear Placido sing Glitter and be Gay, so why does Sarah Brightman think it's appropriate to sing Nessum Dorma....lost maaaaajor credibility with me.
mm hmm I agree, except when Aretha Franklin sang Nessum Dorma in place of Placido at that VH! concert a few years ago. She crossed over, but thats OK... I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to tell her "no you shouldn't do that." Aretha is a big ole girl.....
some of her music I like. I admi to owning 2 of her CD's. A lot of her music is cheesy. She tries too hard, most of the time. I'd never consider her a classical artist or a diva opera star (though she sometimes tries to make herself to look that way.) If it weren't for her ex husband Mr. Lloyd Webber, I don't think anyone would know who she ie.
James recently bought a "greatest hits" CD of hers... so he could finally stop relying on his 4 or 5 mp3s. :-D He gets so sheepish around me when he mentions her because he thinks I think less of him because of his liking her music. It's not that I don't LIKE her... it's just that she is what she is: a broadway singer. This extra image she's gotten for herself (the feathery costumes, the full orchestras, etc) this is what I find to be phony.
She, like Kate Bush and a few others, has a very good voice, but sometimes -- as you've said -- "[they] try too hard." Sometimes, in the middle of singing yet another opera aria (nevermind if it's for a tenor or an alto or a bass) she almost sounds like she's turned into a Geisha (singing in that really nasal and frighteningly bright way).
She ain't my cup of tea, but it's okay if someone else loves her dearly... so long as they don't say she's Classical.
