ok, so I posted a link last night to an application that will allow you to save YouTube vids as either an AVI or MPEG format.
Here's a better gem:
http://vixy.net/ online conversion of the file to either AVI or other file types and then you can save it to your computer.

I already have a plugin for Firefox on my home PC that lets me save YouTube videos, but its a bit tricky to work with. If there's more than one YouTube link on a webpage, I have to select the correct one, and it will save it, and I have to give it a .flv extension, then I had to install a .flv format player. That works, 95% of the time but its not ideal. I believe YouTube uses some kind of Shockwave for their video format.
