Unpaid Internships

Nov 13, 2009 08:56

This article popped up through a government small business mailing list I'm on.

Thought it might be helpful for students to have an idea of what they should expect from an unpaid internship:

I'm just completing an unpaid internship and I was not treated like a slave in any way whatsoever. I could pick which hospital I wanted to do my internship at, and most places offer you a job at the end of your time with them.

Sure I worked hard and had to be there 40 hours a week, but I was always paired with someone, and they were able to teach me so much I couldn't learn from reading a text book or sitting in a class room.

Exactly. I spent my summer (40 hrs/week) in a state mental health hospital. I can tell you SO much about MH drugs and how they work. I can tell you all about the DSM. I can also fill out ALL the paperwork the social workers do. I may not fill it out as well as they can, but I know how.

It was the best experience of my degree.

I had 3 unpaid internships in college and they were all a complete waste of time. The company got free labor off me and I got nothing except an unreliable reference.

I'm all about whistle blowing. If the company is abusing the system, they need to be reported.

Again, not saying all companies do this, cause I know several people who had very positive intern experiences.

Thanks for posting this. I the college I graduated from would forward this to the BFA students (needed an internship to graduate). I knew a girl who interned at a "production company" who had (wayyy) exceed her internship hours while doing office work. When your grade and diploma are being waved above your head, it's not easy to remember that you have rights.

Okay, I just joined this whole Live Journal thing and made my first post to this poor_skills group and had 68 or so replies and now it's been deleted? How in the world is this supposed to be a community for people to share their ideas? I didn't say anything bad, no curse words, or was mean to anyone in any way, shape, or form, so why was it deleted?

Alright, so I suppose now the games begin. You have my IP address, so let's figure this out in-person somewhere now. I will give you my full contact information immediately, so we can respect each other enough to settle this one-on-one instead of taking the coward's approach and hitting the delete button.

Say the word and you'll have your info so we can figure this out.

I'm a not a mod, so I had nothing to do with your post. Try the contact e-mail from the user info (http://community.livejournal.com/poor_skills/profile): yayoubetcha@gmail.com

Maybe they can help you. Though I highly doubt they want to hunt you down with your IP address. Try phrasing things more nicely. You sound rather belligerent.

You may also double check to see if you locked your post by accident. Locked post won't show up unless you're signed in.
