I'm looking into moving home with my mom and step-dad for about 6-11 months while I'm in school. I may only stay with them a few months and then rent a room elsewhere

I'd price storage. You could probably get away with a pretty small unit (stacking stuff and putting the mattress on end) and it might be better if you'll only be there a few months.
I have my sectional, queen mattress, card table, a dining room table, 32" TV, tv table, coffee table, side table, two book shelves, two dressers, as well as other stuff that would need to be stored like childhood dolls and books. I'd need quite a large storage unit.
When my grandmother moved out of her house, we rented an 8x10 storage unit for about $110 a month (they were generally less, but ours was in the driving lane and had a premium price, I guess).
Inside the storage unit: Twin-size bed, full-size dresser, two medium sized desks, a record cabinet, at least 3 boxes of 78 records, 10 boxes of books, assorted wooden/metal chairs, a leather armchair, several tables, lamps galore... you get the idea.
Go actually look at a storage unit and see how big they are. You'd be surprised! Ours had at least a 10ft ceiling, so there's plenty of stacking to be done. As long as you pack stuff well (and take apart what you can), you can fit tons of stuff in one.
Get a small storage unit, store the most important stuff first (the big ticket items and some childhood stuff), stuff whatever else you can in there, sell the rest.
figure out how long you're going to be at your parents. if storage will be $1800 or more, sell the stuff. if storing it will be cheaper than replacing it when you leave their house for your own place again, there you go.
I might only be there 3-4 months or I might be there 6-12 months. I'm not sure right now. If I sold everything, I'd probably move in with a family or roommate who was already set up with furniture.
Have any friends or family who might be able to store/use it for a while?
It would be a shame to get rid of the 2 nice pieces you invested in if you'll be able to use them again in a few months. Since you'll only need it short term, storage might be a good option. I'd call around and check some prices to see whether it's worth it. Maybe you'll find a special or something.
