Hey, I know I hate reading other peoples' essays on lj and some of you probably do too. I also hate debates because I know I suck at them. I'm not trying to convince anybody about anything with this essay. I didn't even proofread this that well. Sorry if I suck at writing papers. The definition of marriage has traditionally been defined as the union between a man and woman. However, a wave of controversy arises as more people try to propose a new and broader definition of marriage.

You might want to add "in the United States" between "marriage" and "has". I say that because there are numerous examples of societies besides our own who have not just allowed, but in some cases encouraged, same-sex type marriages. Notable among these are the ancient Chinese, the ancient Indians (India Indians), and many Native American tribes through means of a "third gender" that we now call "berdaches." I won't take off on an annoying rant here, but I do get annoyed when people like Bush call marriage "the bedrock of civilization" when in fact, concepts of marriage and sexual relationships are and have been incredibly fluid from culture to culture.
