You might want to add "in the United States" between "marriage" and "has". I say that because there are numerous examples of societies besides our own who have not just allowed, but in some cases encouraged, same-sex type marriages. Notable among these are the ancient Chinese, the ancient Indians (India Indians), and many Native American tribes through means of a "third gender" that we now call "berdaches." I won't take off on an annoying rant here, but I do get annoyed when people like Bush call marriage "the bedrock of civilization" when in fact, concepts of marriage and sexual relationships are and have been incredibly fluid from culture to culture.
