Have any of you read J. R. R. Tolkien's work? I can't recommend it highly enough--I really--oh, it's just great, you ought to read it. I read a book a night, I just couldn't put them down.
I mean, The Hobbit was a good book, no denying that, I read it when it came out, but these Lord of the Rings stories of his are above and beyond in quality.

I am afraid that I have never read the story, but... I may vaguely recognize the name.
... [Questioningly, because this is the part he latched onto the most:] Is there a reason you switch from "female" to "women" with your description? They are not the s-same identifier...
[Transgender rights: not a concept Kay is going to be familiar with. At all.]

Do you not think it is possible to maintain peace indefinitely? What would there even be to fight over in a place like Terra?
[To be fair, there actually isn't too much. The social security net protects most individuals, discrimination is legally protected against (that doesn't stop some subtle discrimination from happening anyway, though) and anti-violence taboos are so all-encompassing that most Terrans would even stand and let their loved ones die rather than fight.
... It's not exactly healthy, but it does lead to a state where fighting isn't common at all.]
And at any rate, I would hardly say that every person from such a war-capable world is a barbarian.
... I... have learned better than that, now. [His tone is a little chastised. His boyfriend is a ninja... he can't exactly talk.]

[Has she thought about this before? Yeah. If only because she's written about it.]
Anyway, glad to hear we aren't all lost souls here.

Kay hasn't seen Robert stand and await death in Luceti. But it's nearly happened twice... and it will happen again, until he accepts the fact that defending himself isn't inherently wrong.]
I do wish there were... ways to move between the multiverses represented by this place, if only because the knowledge I gained here is far too precious to lose.
[He learned that being alone isn't always the best way, and that someone really can love him again...]

[Thoughtfully:] But... if you were curious, sometime, I could show you my nanocomputer. I meant to... do a demonstration on it eventually.
[And then Robert lets his guard down, just a little.] I was, er, s-simply in a... rough spot for awhile here, recently.
... Though things seem to have improved. [Famous last words.]

I'm, uh, I'm glad to hear you're doing better. [She's also not probably the best person to come to for solace. >>]

[It's okay, Kay. Robert's gotten advice from worse people before, and besides, he's mostly feeling better.
... For now. Then the draft happens and screws everything up.]
... Thank you. It... it is just one of the... eventualities about this place.
Though I... c-certainly hope something similar never happens to you.

And thanks for the thought.

[He beams slightly at Kay, genuinely interested. Even if it's on paper, this stuff might still be cool to read. After all, the books in the library were interesting.]

So what d'you do?

As for myself, my occupation on Terra was that of a certified astrobiologist. That is, I primarily study life outside of Terra's own biota. I prefer to use the term "exosolar life-form", but many people seem to use "alien" here...

Aliens, eh? D'you have much to study?

I certainly do. My multiverse is full of incredible species, many of which are non-human sapients. [Gush Mode activated!] The variability of life in the multiverse is truly staggering, and new organisms push contemporary understanding of life on a consistent basis...
... There are actually many non-human sapients here in Luceti. Though an inordinate number of them are hominid, at least externally...
[One of them happens to be Don. Which the mun (who is totally not a stalker) notices Kay invited to dinner. That's adorable.]

Must be really interesting. If there're any aliens worth talking about where I'm from, the government's got them locked down tighter than Fort Knox.
I've met a couple of people who'd qualify there--'non-human sapients,' if you like. Pretty nice, on the whole.

... Though perhaps I am... simply unused to interaction on such a frequent basis.
[It's definitely the latter. He's... not that great at social stuff. Could you tell, Kay? Because he still sounds awkward, even without trying to... And this is after five months of improvement.]
