You know what this place could use? A nightclub.

Don't get me wrong, I like Good Spirits a lot, but you can't exactly go there for dinner and dancing. The pizzeria seems like it has room for musicians, but pizza's not exactly ritzy. Sometimes you just want to go somewhere nice and hear a good band, you know? Putting a Tex Beneke record on just ( Read more... )

Yeah. You've gotta have something to do at night. [She sounds a little amused. Based off what Hiccup's said about his home, his surprise makes sense, but it must've been an awful quiet place.] So there's nothing similar where you're from?

Sounds a little more like a pub to me. [Of which she has some experience, albeit not a great amount.]

This is more like...I don't know, say you had a girlfriend, and you wanted to take her somewhere nice on a date. You'd go to a nightclub--well, maybe when you were a man, you would. Probably oughta stick to ice cream parlors and soda fountains for now. Anyway, if you wanted to get dressed up, show her a good time, this is where you'd go.

Could it have a pinball machine?!

...A pinball machine'd probably be better off in the bar, don't you think?

But the bar is pinball-less.

So it'd add to the atmosphere down there. Pinball machines are kind of noisy for nightclubs.

[...Huh. That's not a terrible idea, all things considered. But she should work this back around to her plans. Um.]

What about card games?

What kind of card games?

Well when you think "swank place for music" don't you also think poker games? Or black-jack, maybe mahjong and chinchirorin even though those aren't cards.

If I'm thinking 'Vegas,' I guess? Dunno if we have enough mobsters to keep the tables going around here, though. [Sorry, Haruhi, she's not taking this particularly seriously.]

I would love to hear live music again. Recordings are good, but a real show is an altogether different thing.

Exactly. You just don't get the same effect listening to a 78.

Everyone was always after my friend Geordie to record - he plays the fiddle...and really well, too - but he always said he preferred just performing in pick up gigs. Or, even better, busking.

[a laugh] He called it honest, and I think he's right. There's no denying what an audience thinks of your music when they're right there.

There's something to be said for recordings and broadcasts, too, of course. Half the country'd never hear music otherwise. But there's something special about a performance right in front of your face--never the same thing twice.

There's eight million people in New York. I don't think I'd trust me if this place didn't seem a little boring in comparison.

Oh, really? I'm guessing you didn't head out to the country back home a whole lot, then.

[There's a long pause.]

No. I don't.

[But hey, maybe Bones' family's a decent subject change.] How about you?
