I am getting freaking annoyed with our church ...

A few quick thoughts:

*Why trust Wikopedia, "the free encyclopedia anyone can edit"?

*Why couldn't it be a coded catechetical device? Is there a more plausible explanation?

*Why would a coded catechetical device be necessary when Catholics have a long history of preserving itself in spite of persecution?

*But then again, maybe he was hinting at the triumph of the all-pervasive Gospel, the Truth that will hold place in public regardless of all secularization, albeit incognito.

*What's a PhD among capitalists?

*Yes--that probably wansn't the best use of sermon time.

Wikipedia is a conglomeration of sources. Snopes, for example, isn't open for everyone to edit. Also, one of the christian pages says there's no evidence to support it either way.

Why couldn't it be a coded device? Well, there was no need first of all. Second, it's something that's only song for about one month out of the year, and it's really a poor code at that. "Four calling birds means the four gospels (or the four old testament prophets)" ... How is that particularly useful? It would be, at BEST, an unreasonable method of preserving knowledge.
