I attempted to find an explanation of what fair precisely means, and came up with this:
-Being in accordance with relative merit or significance -Consistent with rules, logic, or ethics -Marked by impartiality and honesty: free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism -Conforming with the established rules
Most of what fair actually means seems to revolve around the individual's perception of what other people should/shouldn't do and what people deserve. In light of this, I'd say that fair is in the eye of the beholder.
But anyway, to stay on subject, I have to reccomend that you read The Princess Bride by William Golding. It has a strong theme of "fairness". Basically, the moral of the story is that life truly isn't fair.
