Was your high school that creepy? notr December 11 2007, 13:10:32 UTC
Around here, and particularly at my own high school, kids--or at least the performing arts crowd--are pretty into connecting with graduates from way back. I guess being the big exurban district that covers half the county gives my high school an oddly strong identity. I see the same kind of thing in friends from the big rural districts out in Sullivan and Delaware Counties.

I try to imagine what my reaction would be if I were a teenager and some 30-year-old beardo came up and started talking about how he went to my high school, and what things were like two band teachers ago, and I concluded that I would want him to go away.

I may just be projecting, though.

ADded to this, the current band director was a student at said school. But you graduated before he was a freshman. You might as well be living on a different planet, or wearing a pin that says, "Ask me about my kid touching."

Clips like these make me feel so musically petty. I'm lucky if I can pull 100 people for my rock band's gigs in Manhattan, but in those clips, 450 people who barely know each other showed up to PLAY, and play the same instrument at that. Are there really 450 tuba players in Manhattan? Gives me new hope that I'll be able to find a sax section for my next project...
