Give 'im the stick DON'T GIVE 'IM THE STICK

I bought a 10-string bass guitar off of eBay. Bass guitars normally have four strings.

Yes, I'm weird. But this purchase should not be a surprise to those who know me. My instrument collection already contains:
  • a Casio MIDI guitar
  • a tiny, silicone-rubber-stringed "Ashbory bass"
  • a bajo sexto
  • a Frumpet
  • soprano, baritone, and contrabass members of ( Read more... )

"Sometimes" also refers to how often Tony Levin plays Stick when in Peter Gabriel's band. Other times, he plays his custom 3-string Music Man. With 'funk fingers' strapped on.

I think JPJ's 10-string is like a 5-string bass, doubled in octaves, the way a 12-string guitar is really a 6-string times two. But the other(?) bassist(?) in his band, Nick Beggs, does play Stick.

After thinking about it for a second, I just assumed your 10-string bass was a 5-string with with doubles (a la 12 string guitar) and wondered if you were thinking of auditioning for Cheap Trick.

At any rate, if that's not what your 10-string bass is, then what is it?

I'm very gratified at your mention of Tony Levin's funk fingers! I assume you're referring to what I'm thinking of. I saw him playing with those things on w/ Peter Gabriel on SNL (I believe "Steam" was the smash hit number being performed, a song I can't say I ever liked that much, but didn't really dislike, but I get it stuck in my head an awful lot, regardless). No one I know seems to remember this, and even among people I know who are familiar with Tony Levin, they have no idea wtf I'm talking about when I bring that up.

Also, the same Nick Beggs from Kajagoogoo?

I've been listening to lots of Meshuggah lately and it's making me want to get one of them kooky 8-string guitars from ESP or Ibanez. The way Meshuggah eschews anything that remotely suggests tonality is fascinating to me. Most other metal bands, especially ones as technically proficient as these guys, make use of at least some sort of scalar pattern that you could recognize as 'tonal' even if there's no key being established per se. Even if it's just within each riff, you can hear intervals that suggest scales. But I've never heard anyone in the metal genre that is less tied to tonality than Meshuggah.
