Can't you ask it show files matching '*'? (or '*.*', or possibly even just '.')...

nah, it doesn't do wild cards, and the other software I've tried (undelete plus) says there's an error on the drive and won't scan it.

Have you tried PC Inspector?

I haven't used it for a while, but I get a niggling feeling that you should be able to recover folders, or select a group of files to attempt to rescue.

Which step were you stuck on?
It can be a bit confusing for the first couple of screens, but once you get your head around it, it's quite easy.

I clicked on the drive picture, and it came up with the c drive and d drive - d being where the lost files are. when I click on the d drive and the big green tick there are no files found
