Prologue.
It was the most magnificent place she had ever seen in all of her years. It was almost hard to believe that she was surrounded by all these things that were so fantastical. Things so absolutely curious. Everything was so interesting, so beautiful that she just wanted to see it all, touch it all just to make sure it was really there. She didn’t want to move, though, didn’t want to disturb the perfection of the place. If she took a step, squishing the crisp green grass under her Mary Jane shoes, it would cause a fault in the otherwise untouched scenery.
Even the air was wonderful, a distinct scent of daisies floating through her, thanks to the field filled with them just to the left of her eyesight. The pretty white flowers looked like they could span on for a whole mile, and she absently wondered how long it would take to count every one of them, and just how many there would be. Many. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Everything in this place was so bright and clear. It was everything she liked about the world. There was no horrible black exhaust from cars that drove too fast, no huge buildings that went up so high that she couldn’t see the tops, casing her in like a cage. Everything was open and happy. That was perhaps her favorite part. There were no angry bustling people with horrible manners around, too busy to notice that they’re bumping into one another. No one was swearing under his or her breath. No one was even there. It was... calm. Calm was nice.
Slowly, she turned in a circle, careful only to step on the grass that she had to, taking in her full surroundings. There was a forest, where she heard the faint sound of birds chirping, the field of daisies, and a pond. Upon close inspection, she also noticed a tiny, barely visible building on the other side of the flowers. It looked like a little Polly Pocket toy castle, like the one she’d kept in her backpack when she was younger. She wanted to find out what it was and if anyone lived there. Surely there wouldn’t be a little castle in the middle of nowhere if people weren’t around. Maybe there was a little town around somewhere? She didn’t know how else whoever lived there would get the things they needed. Like toothpaste. Dental hygene was, after all, important.
She found herself wondering how exactly she'd gotten to be here. She didn't remember a thing. Just that she’d awoken on the comfortable grass just like she’d wake up in her own bed. Regardless, she wished she could live here, stay in this fantastic place forever. It was so perfect and pretty, certainly nicer than her own home. Maybe if she went to the castle and asked if she could stay there, she could live here? She would have liked that very much.
Just as she took her first step toward the daisies, she heard an ear-piercing shriek. Reflexively, the girl’s hands shot up to cover her ears from the awful sound and she jumped back like it was her movement that had offended the land so much. It still came through, invading her eardrums with such force that she thought her ears my stop working. "Evaline!" it screamed.
The girl looked around frantically for the source of the voice calling her name. It was so loud, how could she not see who it was? It felt as if the voice was right in her ear.
"Evaline, wake up!" the voice yelled once more.
With a start, Evaline Moore woke from her dream.
I really need to work on this some more.
