I have not read Ngugi wa Thiong'o - that would be my friend leastlikely, although I will have read the listed book by the end of the year. I have read some of Zora's short fiction, but none of the longer works, which I do intend to rectify.

Feel free to hang around here if you like!

Adding another recommendation! And I'm not even done reading it.

Assata by Assata Shakur. Autobiography. Brilliant writing style.

Adding some more!

Confessions by Saint Augustine. Now I don't think that this book needs much of a push in that it is already widely respected by Catholics and Orthodox all over the planet, but I do think it needs a push because no one ever remembers that it's author, one of the major theological influences in the church was an African (He was a Berber from what is now Algeria specifically.)

Also Song of Kahunsha by Anosh Irani, an Indo-Canadian author. Really neat yet sad story of a young, idealistic boy who leaves his orphanage in Bombay in search of his father and wanders out into streets filled with Muslim-Hindu violence. Really recommended.
