This is almost exactly what I do. The software program I use to write novels with (CopyWrite) has a side panel on which to scribble (electronically) notes in/about each chapter. I usually notate the big idea of the chapter, and where the main characters are supposed be at the beginning and end. That way, I don't end up in a different novel in three chapters, but I still have plenty of room to be creative. Of course, sometimes my characters develop minds of their own and don't do what I thought they should, but that's OK too.
