Inspired by the amazing and beautiful queer stylin' in Northampton, I finally and impulsively put my money where it's been threatening to go for maybe three months now and marched into a small hip, second-floor place and said to a tall thin beautiful Rosa, "I know you're closing soon, but can you cut off all my hair

I cut off all my hair about two months ago. I walked into this pretty salon in a nearby mall and a told Charlie Adams, a wonderful designer, to cut it all off. I thought I would cry as I watched my hair fall away, first in the back, and then the front. He made me close my eyes for the last 20 minutes or so and I did, and I didn't know what I expected to see when I opened them. But I was surprised. I had a neck. And cheekbones. And this face I had been hiding all my life. It was a crazy experience.

When I cut off 18 inches of hair a few years ago, it was probably one of the best decisions I'd ever made.
