PART ONE

The first thing Adam's mom did upon seeing him was hit him.

It was as if he had never left.

Then she held him tight, and told him never to do anything like that again.

"I won't mom. I'm not running anymore."

"Good."

"By the way, thank you."

"For what?"

Adam gave her a look. "I was actually doing all right. Maybe not super happy, but I was content. And then you gave someone the name of the city I was in."

"Oh. Yeah."

She smiled then. "I couldn't not give it to him, Adam. I mean-"

"I know. It's good though. He made me realize a lot of things. That maybe I believed the fairytale too much, and that I gave up too easily. I know better now."

"Good. Then it's okay if I bake him cookies and send him thank you notes?"

"If he has his way, Mom, you'll probably see him a lot more than for just cookies."

She stared. "Oh."

Adam resisted the urge to grin. "Yeah."

She went back to unpacking Adam's things for him. "So he wants to date you?"

"Yeah."

"And you are okay with that?"

"I don't know how I feel about it, exactly. Except that I want it. And that it scares me."

"Good. That means you might actually treat it like a relationship for once in your life."

"Thanks Mom. Love you too."

"I like him. I think he'll be good for you. So don't screw it up."

Adam laughed and hugged her. "It's good to be home again."

Ellen didn't bother with filler questions. Adam had always liked that about her.

"So exactly what happened? I mean, one moment you are Adam Lambert, rock star, and then next you are Adam Mitchell, vocal coach?"

Adam laughed. "Sort of. A lot of things happened. I let them happen. To put it in a short story format, I kind of let things slip through my hands. I didn't fight hard enough for what I wanted. But now I'm going to."

"So you're recording an album now?"

"Yeah. I still wrote, so I have a lot of material to work with. I've been doing some co-writing, too."

"That's good. How is it getting back in the saddle?"

"Weird. I mean, it should feel strange, but it's like I never left."

Ellen nodded. "Okay, one last question, for me, because I'm sure no one else wants to know."

"Okay."

"There was a rumor that you had a special someone back in Ohio? True or not? And do we get to meet him?"

Adam laughed again. "Um, yes, there was someone, but he came to see me while I was there. I can't say who it was, because well, it really isn't official yet. But I promise that you'll be the first to know. Maybe when I give my first performance from my CD he'll stop by."

After the cameras stopped rolling, Ellen hugged him. "You really like him, don't you?"

"Does it show that badly?"

She nodded. "He must be special."

"Yeah. He got me back here."

She smiled and pat him on the back. "He's a keeper then."

Adam smiled and wondered what she would say if she knew.

It shouldn't have been as easy as it was.

But recordings and reunions and meetings took up most of his days, with his free time devoted to sleep and consistently failing at actually going on a date with Kris. There were arguments with the label, disagreements with writers and one epic yelling match with Kris that ended with both of them on the floor, tearing at each other's clothes, only to be interrupted by Carolyn walking into Adam's apartment and running back out.

It was only bonus that she blushed every time she saw Kris.

Adam began to realize that it wasn't that it was easy, it was that he had learned how to recognize that the bad times weren't insurmountable, and that if he could survive high schoolers, anything was possible. There were moments where he panicked, thinking it wouldn't be possible. Then he focused on why he had come back, and he calmed again.

Two actual dates and four months after Adam came back to LA, he spent the night at Kris's house.

It had begun as dinner, both of them laughing over Adam's latest song issue, and Kris had looked at Adam over brownies and asked him to stay.

Adam didn't even hesitate before saying okay.

Kris stood silently, leading Adam down a hallway. When they reached Kris's room, Kris had pressed him into the door, his knee between Adam's legs, his mouth on Adam's neck, sucking and licking and biting until he reached Adam's ear.

"I want you."

Adam's hands clenched then, his stomach flipping. "Kris-"

"Please."

The word was low, almost unheard. But it was enough to quell any doubts in Adam's mind. All promises he had made to himself about waiting had fallen away the moment he had agreed to stay.

They laughed. That was new for Adam. He had never laughed much during sex, but Kris managed it.

"That's cold," Kris said as Adam applied the lube. "Why didn't I buy the warming kind?"

Adam snorted, nipping gently at Kris' shoulder. "Killing mood."

"Am not," Kris said, arching under Adam's touch. Then-

"Oh."

"Oh?"

"Oh. I liked the phrase so much I stole it."

They stopped speaking after that, except for names and sighs, Kris 's eyes wide, his breath quickening as Adam pushed his way in. Adam stopped the moment they fit together, pausing to remember how right it was. Then Kris moaned something resembling "Don't stop", and he moved again, slowly at first, his hand fisted around Kris's cock. Kris had his head thrown slightly back at first, then back up, eyes locked with Adam's as their bodies moved together.

Adam kissed him again, desperate to be even closer, Kris's hands digging into his back, and the only thing he heard was his own name, repeated again and again in heightened whispers, until they came almost together, Adam laying his head on Kris's shoulder a moment before pulling away.

"Don't leave."

"Don't worry, I won't."

Kris watched him solemnly as he threw away the condom, and padded back to the bed, a washcloth in hand. He continued to watch as Adam washed him, slow smooth strokes, followed by a press of lips to Kris's forehead. Adam lay down next to Kris then, and pulled him close. Adam kissed him again, once on each eyelid. "I think you are kind of perfect."

"I do believe I said that to you first. So who is stealing whose lines?"

"Shut up and go to sleep Allen"

He laid his head against the pillow, watching as Kris shifted into his normal spot.

"Adam?"

"Yeah."

"I know we've been on like two dates, and that I'm probably being forward-"

"Kris. Just ask."

"Will you stay tomorrow too? And maybe the next day?"

Adam closed his eyes.

"Adam? I mean you don't have to. I just thought maybe we could skip all that other stuff and-"

"Can I stay forever?" Adam opened his eyes and looked down.

Kris blinked, and then smiled. "Okay. But I like the hair long. I don't care what color. It has to stay long."

"As long as you remember to shave."

"Deal," Kris said, tucking his head into Adam's shoulder and falling asleep.

Adam stayed awake a little longer, his hand idly stroking up and down Kris's back. He smiled a little, small and secret, because this was where he belonged. Since his return to LA he had begun to realize that he had been playing a part for so long he had forgotten how to be himself. That was his true problem.

When he auditioned for Idol, he had molded himself into who he thought he wanted to be. But it wasn't right. Somehow he had realized it. So he had hidden himself away in another role, trying to figure out just what he wanted.

There was going to be media that said he was using Kris to regain his status among the elite. Here would be some that said he had ruined a great man. There would be media that said he was going to disappear as quickly as he had before. There would be a story for every day, each one tearing him apart before he even presented himself to the world.

Adam closed his eyes and smiled. But this time was different. He knew exactly what he wanted, when he wanted it, and how he was going to do it.

He wanted to make music, in whatever way was possible. Whether it was touring for millions or singing for a small crowd in a dirty bar, that's what he was going to do. He was doing it now, but he knew that no matter what happened with the album, he would do it for the rest of his life.

If money, fame or anything else came with it, then that was just extras.

"Go to sleep Adam, and stop thinking so loud," Kris mumbled, pressing a kiss to Adam's chest, and settling again.

Adam sighed, drifting off. Once upon a time…

He breathed deeply, and curled around Kris.

Tomorrow would be soon enough to begin ever after. Right now was enough for him.
