What you want is an lj-cut.

Here is the FAQ on how to do it:

Basically, if you're not posting in the text editor (you will know you are if you have buttons at the top of your posting box for italics and stuff; if you have those buttons there's an lj-cut button too), you put "< lj-cut >" (but take out the spaces before the 'l' and after the 't') at the beginning and "< /lj-cut >" (again without the spaces) at the end. I had to put in the spaces or LJ hides the text in the <'s.
