summary: Jiho seen through Yukwon's eyes. Because Yukwon is always watching.
Yukwon is always watching.
He is watching with sleepy eyes, when he first meets with Jiho. It's four past something in the morning and they're sitting in front of a convenience store in those plastic chairs, beers no longer cold in their hands. They meet through Kyung and they spend the night all three of them, talking about anything. Yukwon is quite shy at first but soon, Jiho's excited eyes and lips that talk about a huge dream, about music, about writing, everything that comes out of his mouth gets to Yukwon. And when he goes to sleep when the sun rises up, he smiles.
He is watching with cautious eyes when he is facing his contract with Stardom. They're young, they're promised to a great future, to success, to a lot of love. There isn't two bands like them and they go by the name of Block B. That's what they are said and Yukwon bites down on his lower lip when he is about to sign, because that's it, that's now. Years of practicing, through tears, sweat and blood, without giving up, everything ends and starts here. He glances up and notices Jiho's attentive eyes on everyone, pride lightening them. He is a young leader, but Yukwon trusts him. So he signs.
He is watching with worried eyes when they're about to debut, in backstage. Other groups are performing and the screams are loud, the fans are here and Yukwon wonders if one day they'll get as much as them. In his head, he thinks about his lines, about the choreography. He is nervous, he can't mess up, don't forget to look at the camera and to be handsome, one, two, three, four. Jiho asks for them to join him and they are forming a circle, it's the real beginning in five minutes, he says, he is proud of them, they're going to show everyone who they are. Yukwon still feels nervous, but not as worried. They're up next, they can do it. And they do.
He is watching through the mirrors as they go through the dance for the hundredth time. They're exhausted, Taeil stumbles on the side, Jaehyo misses a few steps but they go through it until the song ends and it's a cue for the day, night, whenever it is. Nanlina is a fun dance and they hope to get a bit more famous with that song, that catchy song Jiho produced. Yukwon glances at the leader, who is repeating the same moves over and over again and Yukwon just can't stand it, he needs to stop, he is going to collapse, he is their leader. But before he can make a step towards him or say a word, Kyung tackles Jiho down on the warm floor of the room and they're laughing. Yukwon stops looking for a second.
He is watching when everything goes bad. When Jiho shaves his head, he looks at him, his mind screaming, why, why are you doing this, don't do this, but nothing comes out from his mouth. He'll cry later. When Jiho buries himself into work, when they all go back home for a while after they apologized. His mother doesn't comment on his puffy red eyes after he spent the night watching the interview and the performances and the apologies. He wonders where it went wrong. He can't bear watching them, watching him, like this. This isn't what they've been promised to.
Weeks go by and he gets a call, the call. His voice is cheerful and Yukwon smiles. He hears Kyung in the background along with Jihoon and they say they all need to go back to work, they have a comeback to make, fans are waiting. Jiho is excited through the phone, he is laughing and how much Yukwon has missed this. Before Jiho hangs up, Yukwon has already started to pack some clothes under the amused gaze of his mother. She doesn't say anything when her son grins at her, that one grin that appears each time a certain person is included.
And Yukwon is watching again. He is watching as everyone comes back one by one, everything going back to place as if they never left at first. Jaehyo has barely walked in that he is already being teased, Jihoon is crushing Taeil in a bear hug, fakely crying about how much he missed his favorite hyung in the whole world. Besides him, Minhyuk rolls his eyes and Yukwon chuckles, eyes lightening up when he finally comes in. He looks tired and his hair has grown back up, maybe he even gained a bit of weight, but he looks great, and his laugh fills the room when Jaehyo screeches at the state of his hair or when Kyung comments that Jiho would always look better than the ulzzang anyway. Their eyes meet for a second and Yukwon looks down, smiling to himself while Jiho is dragged away.
He is watching his back, sitting down on the couch. Jiho is busy listening to the records they did during the day, headphones worn on top of a snapback, body hunched over a bunch of papers full of notes, what was good and what was not, what he needs to change and if that word doesn't sound better instead of that one. Yukwon is tired, his voice is hoarse so he lays down on the couch, head tilted to where Jiho is sitting. He vaguely wonders if he'll always be watching from afar like he does since they met before sleep takes over him.
He is watching when they're at the radio and they're singing Movie's Over. Jiho is in front of him, they're all tired and sick but they're glad to be able to go on schedules again. The comeback is going quite well for now and they're being careful with what they say, what they do. They worked on themselves. In the van, Jiho falls asleep against his shoulder and Yukwon watches him. At this moment, Kyung turns around from the front seat and Yukwon looks up at him in surprise. No word is exchanged although the rapper offers a knowing grin to the dancer. Yukwon blinks and decides to close his eyes although he doesn't fall asleep because someone starts to snuggle close to him in his sleep and Yukwon just wants to remember this moment.
He is watching when Jiho is waving at him from the dorm's door. Yukwon smiles but it doesn't reach his eyes and he leaves before he does or says anything he would regret later. They announced a few weeks ago what happened with their now ex-company and just like before, their ways separate again. Nobody knows how long it will take, the lawsuit, if they'll ever comeback on stage, but he is sure of one thing because Jiho said it and he never lies: they won't give up, they won't stop, they won't break up. He feels sickly sad for the fans. They promised things they still can't give them. Yukwon wants to stop watching and forget even though he knows he is in too deep.
He is watching himself when he is practicing. He gets news from everyone every now and then, not quite on a daily basis, but almost. May it be Jaehyo's whiny text about how bored he is or Minhyuk's one word reply, he gets them all. All but one. Jiho doesn't call or text and Yukwon isn't worried because it's Jiho. He is just, a bit, really, disappointed so he drowns himself into dancing and singing although it's only for himself. He collapses down on the bench in the back of the room and breathes heavily, rubbing his sweaty face with a towel. He remembers days and nights practicing endlessly with six other boys with silly dreams and he almost wants to cry.
He is watching with wide eyes when Jiho shows up one day of January at his mother's house. It's early in the afternoon and Jiho grins sheepishly as he walks in, Yukwon suddenly embarrassed of still wearing his sleeping attire. Jiho brought snacks and Yukwon's mother comments about how he should eat more because it's too cold and he'd still look great with rounder cheeks, isn't it Yukwon? He rolls his eyes and drags Jiho to his bedroom, and he watches, always. He watches how Jiho looks around, how Jiho sits down next to him on his bed, how Jiho smiles at him. They spend the day talking about anything, reminiscing about fun things that happened in the past. Yukwon thinks that he could spend days and days listening to Jiho talking, even if he is talking about something as silly as the weather. But somehow, Jiho always talks about the future and Yukwon finds himself dreaming with him. They fall asleep somewhere between midnight and one in the morning, and when Yukwon's mother walks in to check up on them, their legs are tangled, Yukwon's face is buried into Jiho's neck and their arms are wrapped around the other.
He is watching when they finally are able to stand back up. It's between the end of winter and the start of spring when they're born again. They still can't tell anyone, but plans are made and they start getting excited again. It's a new beginning. April comes by and Jiho is back to writing for them, he has ideas and he is confident, they can do it this time. He spends a lot of time in the studio and they all do their own things to get better, to improve, to be a Block B people will remember through music and not scandals. Yukwon shares nights with Jiho, because Jiho looks at him in a way where Yukwon feels wanted. So he tags along and although most of times he falls asleep on the couch, Jiho doesn't seem to mind.
Yukwon is always watching Jiho. He admires him, he respects him. He feels strong and confident when
they stand side by side, all of seven together. He feels warm when Jiho's hands touch him playfully, he smiles when Jiho does and, Yukwon wonders since when his life was depending on Jiho's.
There's one time where Yukwon stops watching.
It's September, they spent the whole previous day and night filming for their new music video. It's going to be crazy and fun and just, it's going to be them. They reach the dorm exhausted but ecstatic, it's a weird combination. Jihoon is singing about his precious Taeil hyung and Jaehyo whines about how loud he is but he still laughs anyway. Kyung and Jiho are still laughing about the greasy rapper's part in the song while Minhyuk collapses on the couch. Yukwon watches them, smiling to himself and goes to the bathroom, he needs to shower. He doesn't have time to open the door that someone pushes him in gently and locks the door. Yukwon turns around and meets Jiho's sheepish grin. Fingers find their way to Yukwon's lips, where the lip rings were. Yukwon is too tired to understand or ask what is going on, but he doesn't miss Jiho glancing at him, about to take a step closer but finally take a step back to only move closer a few seconds later. No word is said when Jiho's face is getting closer to Yukwon's. They're just gazing at each other, smiling tiredly. And then, it seems so natural. The way their lips fit together, the way Yukwon's hand find their way around Jiho's waist while he is pressed gently against the door. Yukwon doesn't remember closing his eyes but when he opens them, he is grinning and Jiho kisses the tip of his nose. Yukwon yawns, Jiho laughs. Nobody comments when they walk to Jiho's room a few minutes later, fingers intertwined.
Yukwon is still watching after that, but it's okay. He knows that Jiho is watching back.
