Oddness

I have this weird thing I like to do, where if I'm writing some fanfic where a real life show crosses over with a cartoon, I'll go look at models/actors and try to find a real life face/body to put them in. I do this because whenever I'm working on fic, I "see", more or less, the story in action in my head and I don't like to mash up the 2D cartoon with the real life people. It's too weird (and I'm weird, I know, so hush).

So anyway, as you might have guessed, I've been working on an outline for a fic that crosses over the human characters and cartoons. Based on my interests you may have also guessed that the cartoon I had in mind is Sailor Moon (cause really, what else would I write about?). I'm not gonna mention the live action show I'm crossing it over with, aside from the fact that it's a TV show and not a movie.

And so I thought I'd share my findings with the interwebs, since you guys might be able to come up with better matches for these particular characters then I can. Without further adieu, here are my attempts at making a real life Minako Aino and Makoto Kino. Be afraid.

First off is Julie Gonzola as Minako. Admittedly, this was actually not my idea, but I think it's brilliant. I found the suggestion in a thread about a possibility for a live action Sailor Moon movie. This girl was actually listed as the chosen Minako, though as far as I know this movie has not yet come to pass. Needless to say, appearance-wise, I think it's sheer brilliance. She definitely has the youthful, cheery look which I think defines Minako. Almost every picture I saw of her just radiated Minako's brilliance, even when her expression was downcast. I believe this one's a keeper.

Now, when I looked at the suggested casting for Makoto, I disagreed with their choice. In fact, of the seven casting choices they listed, I only agreed with three. Part of the problem was that they picked very striking girls for those three, yet the rest were either too 'blah' or their features did the part no justice (for example, the girl they chose for Usagi looked older on account of her strong cheek bones, which significantly aged her face).

The thing about the senshi for me is that they should each have very unique looks, yet somehow be equally striking. For instance, the girl they picked for Ami was kind of wide eyed and sweet looking, with dark hair and pale skin. I thought her appearance was entirely appropriate for what I imagine Ami looking like. Whereas the girl they picked for Rei was too tan, too skinny, with no really exotic features. The first person I think off when casting a Rei is Megan Fox. Not a perfect match, but the exotic, sensual beauty is there. As for Ami, I think of Zoey Deschanel. Different in appearance, but stands out on her own for being a kind of unusual beauty.

So I didn't agree with their Makoto. Swell, I get to look for my own Makoto. Which is HARD. Like, really hard. Part of the problem is that Makoto is my favorite character, and I've got an image in my head of what she should look like. Unfortunately, mental image and reality don't always mesh, and I don't know of nearly enough actresses to be able to pluck one from the midst and say "That's her, that's definitely her."

So in the end, I went with Olivia Wilde, which I don't completely like, either. Part of the problem I have with my choice is that Wilde is a very sexy woman. She doesn't have to get dolled up to look amazing, which I love about her. Unfortunately, this means that when she does wear make up and designer labels (which happens in about 95% of the pictures I've seen of her) she looks like smoking hot sex on heels, which doesn't quite fit Makoto's image. Still, I managed to find a few fashion shots of her dressed simply or with minimal make up, and it's pretty much how I'd want Makoto to look all the time.

Another part of my image problem with Makoto was that I wanted her to have a strong jaw, which so few women have. The only other I could think of off the top of my head was Kiera Knightley, and while the face is right, the body is completely wrong.

Admittedly.
