I thoroughly enjoyed both "The Incredible Journey" and "Watership Down" - two so-called children's books I'd never read before.  And "The Silent Miaow" is so so true.  I notice Skippy the Cat has been reading it in secret too (I keep finding kitty fluff between the pages).

Prize for the best book I read in 2013 goes to Patti Smith's "Just Kids". Just because.
