i too have come to the realization that the majority of the people in my past did not deserve my time. so i totally get where your coming from... i dont think your a masochist, you may just be attracted to guys with good potential that you feel you can help. but dissonance abounds when you realize that your the only one putting in any effort.

its funny because last night i went out with a very cute girl who is oddly; very normal, well adjusted, has definite direction and that is unfamiliar. so dont plan your escape just yet!
