Summary: AU ending of the "I love you" scene from 2x06, "Home, Part 1"
Author's Notes: I think I cracked up for like five minutes after seeing this scene LOLOL. So funny. Poor Lee xD

The first thing he notices about the Pyramid ball is how it smells: sweat, of course, permeated it from years of usage... but that wasn't the only scent about it. The tinge of ash and loss clung to it like a curse. How it could be doing Kara any good at all was beyond Lee Adama.

"Can I have my ball back," Kara says, sticking out her calloused hand. Lee grins at her, tries to get her to act like he knows Starbuck would-- someone who'd play around, laugh, do something other than throw that frakking Pyramid ball against the wall of the ship. Kara doesn't budge. She hasn't budged since she got back from Caprica.

"I'm just having some fun, Kara," Lee calls after her after she mutters an expletive and sits away from him. Regret immediately slithers its way into Lee's head, and he frowns. "Here, fine," he relents, dropping the ball into her lap.

"Doesn't matter anyway," Kara murmurs. Lee's forehead furrows and somehow he knows that some frak has messed with Kara, his Kara, and it makes him frakking angry. He pushes the anger down and sits back to back from her. At first he rambles, about how difficult it must have been for her down on Caprica. Kara seems to eminate a "You don't know the half of it" vibe and Lee backs off.

That's just about when his brain decides to turn off.

"Kara, I'm your friend, I love you, if there's anything you wanna talk about... anything you wanna get off your chest, I'm here for you," Lee blurts.

FRAK.

Lee resists the urge to run out of the room. Now was not exactly when he'd planned on expressing his deepest, darkest feelings for his co-pilot.

"Anyway," Lee says, clearing his throat. "Whenever you want to talk, I'm here for you."

Shit. Shit, shit shit--

Lee is on the move out of the rec room when he says it.

"What was that middle part again?" Kara asks coyly, shifting in her seat to face a retreating Lee Adama, former CAG. "Did you say you loved me?"

"Aaarh," Lee says pointedly. Kara raises both eyebrows and her faces breaks into a grin.

"Lee Adama loves ME--"

"No--"

"That's very sweet, LEE ADAMA LOVES ME--"

"Well, what I meant was--"

"NO, NO TAKEBACKS, YOU LOVE ME--"

"You're dreaming it, Kara," Lee sighs, finally stopping in the hall out of the room he'd now like to christen Hell.

"You love me," Kara says simply, placing the ball on the ground. Lee rolls his eyes; when Kara starts approaching him, well, that was when he started to tense.

"Dreamer," Lee says brusquely as she comes to a standstill before him.

"Mhmm. Okay," Kara says softly, looking up and down Lee and Gods she's practically undressing him with her eyes. It's almost painful not to grab her and just frak her right there in the rec room. Lee, however, prides himself on his restraint.

"Yeah," Lee says eloquently. Kara barks a laugh out, and then all is quiet.

"Caprica was... shit," she says markedly. Lee restrains his laughter at her antiquated diction. "It was more than shit, though. There are people there. Not toasters... humans. A resistance, Lee."

Lee feels his eyes bulge.

"What?" Lee gawks. Kara nods and leads him to the wall of the rec room, back towards her small striped Pyramid ball.

"They need us, Lee. They won't last long without a SAR mission ASAP," Kara sighs, fingers resting now on Lee's lapel. Lee admits that he's not paying nearly enough attention to what Kara's saying as to how her fingers move nimbly up and down his chest.

"Promise me that after Kobol we'll go back to Caprica, Lee. Promise me." Kara's voice seems far away, as if she'd been sending a transmission from Caprica itself.

"Promise," Lee concurs, wrapping his two hulking arms around her. Kara lets herself get squeezed in; she pressed her face against his chest, tucking her chin in and letting out a loud sob that was muffled by Lee's regular jacket.

Lee puts a hand on her hip, and Kara flinches. Lee balks.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry--" Lee says, taking all hands off her. Kara's eyes widen.

"No, Lee--" Kara hisses. "Not you. It's..." She hesitates. Kara doesn't hesitate, and Starbuck sure as hell wouldn't either. "It's a battlescar from Caprica." Lee's eyes widen.

"Can I see?" he asks. Kara grins sadly.

"What can I say, I like to show off my scars."

He kneels and peels back her jacket; he sees the bandage immediately. He removes it and sees two scars: one long and thing, most likely from a scalpel or lazer or some kind, and one largers and more intense... something like a bullet, he would guess.

"One of those is a bullet hole. The other is personal."

Lee puts the bandage back.

"Personal?"

"I don't want to talk about it." Kara's eyes turn steely and Lee knows that he's overstayed his visit in Kara's hormonal hotel.

"Alright," he says, pulling her jacket back down. He stands to face her; she's no longer looking at him. It's like she's completed a mission, and Lee is in the dark. Sighing, he leans down and rests his lips against her forehead. Slowly, he presses a soft kiss against her pale skin. Kara's face clenches and Lee can tell that she's crying again.

"I'm sorry," he apologizes again. She doesn't respond this time. Lee begins to walk out once more.

"You love me," Kara calls after him, just as he's about to close the hatch door. Lee grins and shakes his head to himself.

"Yeah," he mutters, just loud enough for himself to hear.

The hatch door closes, and Starbuck can finally smile.
