jesse and i have grown spoiled by living in our wee house and we've decided that we really don't want to go back to apartment living. like, ever. if at all possible. as such, we are contemplating attempting to buy a house when we move to washington. of course, we're poor as fuck and only i have credit of any kind, so, i don't know how possible this ( Read more... )

how to get filthy stinking rich: tomahto May 31 2006, 05:46:34 UTC
buy a condo, then sell it when the market goes up. then buy a little house with that money. then sell it when the market goes up. then buy a bigger house. lather, rinse, repeat.

we've thought about that, but, we're afraid that the market won't go up, or worse, that it'll go down. it's really too unpredictable for us to bank on that... i mean, if we bought a little house someplace and then hey it goes up, that's great, but i'd hate to be stuck in a shitty condo someplace cos we couldn't unload it. =/ iunno.

it always goes up eventually. real estate is the most stable market.

for example, with my mom's condo. we bought it way below market because we were buying it from friends. 89,000. then we had the huge mudslide in '96 and the property value went wayyyyy down. somewhere in the 60,000 range. as of today, I think it's gone back up past what we paid for it, I believe in the 6 figure range. you'd think that it would have stayed down forever, especially because they never did build the mudslide barriers they said they were going to on the mountain behind us, so it's entirely possible it could happen again. but guess what? everybody forgot about it. and the condos have an incredible fucking view.

You could always rent out a condo until you have enough money, and renting a condo/townhome would put Jesse's credit up too.

Will I see both of you ladies and Steve this Friday at our birthday par-tay?

i love this idea.

start putting extra buck away now -- you'll need a hefty chunk to get started...

when you're closer to being ready to buy, let me know and i'll hook you up with the best mortgage broker in the universe and she'll help you figure everything out.

we've been looking at foreclosed properties these past couple days.. it's more difficult than looking at normal properties, because it's just a list of addresses, short descriptions and prices instead of long descriptions and photos, but we've found several places foreclosing for between $50-$100,000 which are in better areas and just as big ( ... )

don't be ridiculous -- stay with me when you get to seattle, silly.

janie, the boys and i are trying to figure out how we're going to handle your farm of animals, but that's the only hurdle that i see!

Oh, but an apartment could be so lovely if you spruce it up a bit...

yes, but, apartments mean obnoxious neighbors. apartments mean no yard for our doggies to run in. apartments mean paying someone else's mortgage and more, without any right to change the things you don't like about the place. apartments mean paying someone to have the priviledge of having a pet, if you're allowed at all. i'm just over it. i've got nothing against apartments themselves -- i really liked the last one i was in -- but they just don't compare to houses in so far as what i value in a home.
