When Meru tried to look at her eyes she commented how happy she was, because Meru already love her so much that it would make her blush. An opposite effect happened in kindergarten when she met Hitou Nami, a normal girl. Whenever she was asked by her teacher about her new friends, she would answer 'Great!' enthusiastically with a big smile. But when she was asked about Hitou Nami, her smile and enthusiasm disappeared when she answered 'Ordinary.' She also has a healthy relationship with her classmates who also have weird issues of their own.
PERSONALITY:
Kafuka is a girl who has an unwavering optimism and mystery. In any situation given, she always sees the light even how negative it is that it would sound so odd. Some of the examples were: attempting to commit suicide is making oneself taller, stalking is deep love, rumor mongering is positive counter-measure against spies, and having a hikikomori (a person who suffers acute social withdrawal) is a zashiki warashi or a spirit guarding families. She also dismisses the fact that serious cases like, rape, murder and etc. are part of reality since she strongly believes that they only exist on television, radio and newspapers. There is no way she would believe that there could be negative things in the world.
She is always cheerful and appreciative of things around her. At times she may be reckless and naive, but in truth she really knows what is happening around her. Behind her smiling face and positive thoughts lies a traumatic childhood. At a young age, her family suffered financial problems. It caused her father a lot of grief and attempted suicide several times which Kafuka witnessed at a tender age. In one occasion her mother also attempted to end her life and also became a subject to demonic possessions. In chapter 7 and episode 4 of the first season, Kafuka is shown with a bandage on her right wrist hinting a self infliction injury.
Her family background is also pretty grim. One of her uncles is imprisoned in a correctional facility and her other uncle suffered a chronic illness whom her parents lied to and said that it was only a cold. These may have led her to have misconceptions about some things, because of her family not fully explaining serious matters. When she started school she was often teased by kids due to her weird preferences (mostly on food and aliens) and odd behavior. From this very harsh environment, she developed extreme optimism to protect herself from depression. Her optimism is her salvation and the truth is her vulnerability. She denies everything negative and bad to make herself believe everything is fine. Because of this, she unknowingly developed malice internally which surfaces at times. In an occasion, Meru, her classmate saw nothing but blood lust in her eyes. She also had a twisted grin of satisfaction when her school was burned down to ashes. She even beguiled her homeroom teacher by disguising as a college student which hinted a twisted persona. The appearances of her twisted personality happens randomly.
Even though Kafuka hides a dark side, she is very friendly, playful, and happy-go-lucky. She loves and enjoys naming people or things without their consent and approval at whim. She is always willing to help those who are in need, even though it ends up screwing everything or putting someone in danger (she almost killed Nozomu every time she tries to save him and she almost led the class to carbon monoxide poisoning). Her stubbornness is undeniable and sometimes it would scare people. If she thinks she is right, she would dismiss any correction or suggestion from anyone.
She is deeply infatuated with aliens especially from the POROROCO planet (no one knows if it exists or not) and even developed strange ambitions. One of the teachers in her school even want to put her under special observation, because her three hopes in life are implausible. She wrote her three hopes in the future as GOD, TIME TRAVELER and a POROROCO-ian. She believes everything is possible if we have hope.
