Okay, can understand why The Anarchist Cookbook by William Powell is on the list, but James and the Giant Peach?! What?! Grief, what do people think kids are going to do, go round looking for catipillers and other insects and attempt to Genetically Modify them?! *Is so confused* Oh, and no, Wally/Waldo (NZ knows him by both, I think), is exactly the same in Britain and America - its just they thought "Waldo" was more appropriate for American kids...what with "Wally," being a bit on the dodge sounding side.
And the LJ problem? It's weird, I had a "comments" issue too, where I couldn't get any comments made sent to me - and then, of coruse, they all suddenly came in this huge diluge. Not cool. *Is being really unhelpful* Um. I'm procrastinating...
With the lj comments, it's that theywere there on the page. Then one day they just...went. You know, when everyone had Firewhisky for Neville's Birthday, then Harry got a lovely empty Firewhisky bottle? They're just gone. Weird.
I checked, and apparently James and the Giant Peach was banned for its use of the word 'ass' and for encouraging kids to disobey adults (even if they are abusive).
There were also objections to the magic beans, the references to drugs (tobacco & snuff) and alcohol (Whisky, to be precise!).
As for Where's Wally/Waldo? I was almost right about why it was objected to. The complaint was that "on some of the pages there are dirty things." *snickers* If you look closely there is allegedly a topless sunbather on one of the pages. The horror. You'd never see anything like that in reality, would you? Makes you wonder why they were looking so closely...
Over here, you would call someone a wally if they were a bit of an idiot, I didn't know about the dodginess.
Where's Waldo? by Martin Hanford (Where's Wally? in UK) WTF? Yeah. It's true, Where's Waldo has been banned. I did a report in English on banned books, and was astounded at some of the books on the lists! Of course, it all started for me with Potter, but Little Red Riding Hood has been banned, The Lorax has been banned, I mean I can understand The Anarchist Cookbook being banned, but children's stories? Come on!
I can't believe they ban books from schools so frequently in the US, it's just bizarre.
I suppose the objection to Red Riding Hood was about the fact that the story is allegedly a metaphor for lost innocence of a different kind. Like you picked up on that when you were a child?!
It really just makes me more curious about the books in question. :)
