Commodore Rothwell was wide awake. Unfortunately, he was likely to remain so for some time as he wasn't going to be able to return to his quarters in the Comet to sleep and he had the worst kind of insomnia on land. His consternation only deepened, however, when he crossed the yard of the fort toward the Admiral's house. Things were not right, he could sense it in the air - and then there was the fact that there were no guards in several of their regular stations. Yet, he'd heard no alarm, no reason for them to have hurried elsewhere, and the marine escorting him into the Vice Admiral's presence barely said a word beyond the typical pleasantries. He wasn't going to bother asking the marine, since one would assume that Vernon would have a better idea of what was going on ( ... )
