Chell dragged herself up the stairs, exhausted but glad to be home. She certainly didn't mind hard work, but it would be nice if she could do something that pushed her mentally as well as physically, she thought to herself. It couldn't be helped though. She had no qualifications or experience (actually, she thought she probably did, but there was no way of proving it), and so, while she remained mute, most people would think of her as not exactly bright

It was actually kind of impressive, Chell thought. He'd learned to read remarkably quickly, the same way he'd learned to walk and eat and do all the other things he needed. His body must have retained some sort of muscle memory while he was frozen, she decided. His conscious mind had just needed a bit of prompting. Maybe the woman upstairs was a retired teacher, or just a kind soul with too much time on her hands. Either way, Wheatley had gone from being so illiterate she'd had to stop him trying to drink cooking oil, to confidently reciting the details of a particularly graphic dream that she'd recorded in her diary
