A flash of indignation swelled within him. She was wrong. He had never wanted to hurt her, not once, not until the surge of input from the chassis had overwhelmed him, feeding those terrible, sinister impulses into his consciousness. All he had wanted was to escape from the relaxation center that had almost instantaneously become a mausoleum with the depletion of the facility’s backup power. He’d received the first warning message mere minutes before the facility failed, and with nobody there to guide him, to tell him what to do, he’d been helpless to prevent the catastrophe. The intentional glitches in his programming obscured from him the proper procedure to use to save the test subjects, confounding his search, rendering his efforts useless
