Throughout my life, until this week, I would have fairly unhesitatingly answered "Yes, I am a geek," if asked. It seemed to be the question of the week on my friends list, though (I blame
xamses), so I decided to actually think about it. I really don't know.
There are many things which point fairly strongly towards my geekhood:
- I play role playing games
- I go to gaming conventions
- I have, from time to time, been known to describe reality in gaming terms (e.g. "Wow, Rasputin must have been pretty high level. All those hit points, combined with his good saving throws...")
- I have a reasonable knowledge of computers
- I read a lot, primarily science fiction
- I have been known to be quite socially awkward
- I learn dead languages for fun
- I have never managed to maintain a relationship longer than 2 months
- I'm sitting here writing this list, instead of sleeping before work
On the other hand, there are several things which point toward my non-geekhood:
- I'm actually fairly in shape, though I don't look it (I can sustain a 20+ mile/day walk for weeks, and have proved this in the past)
- I'm fairly skilled with various weapons, none of which the SCA allows
- My computer knowledge, though vast, is quite out of date -- things more recent than about 1999 are mysteries to me
- I work extremely mundane jobs (grocery and retail)
- I do not now, nor did I ever live in my parents' basement (indeed, I became self-sufficient financially before leaving for college)
- I enjoy clubbing and going to parties, and do so on a regular basis
So, I pose this question to you, both those of you who I've known for years, and those I've just met: Am I a geek? Feel free to post your thoughts, extensions of either list, etc.
