Why is it that when we make bad choices in life they have to hurt other people. Why can't they just reflect on ourselves? I mean when you do something insanely stupid it's hard enough to deal with yourself... but then you go and hurt the people that mean the most to you. I never much liked simple answers for complex things, but I had a few thoughts. I think one of the biggest reasons may be for teaching purposes. If it did just reflect on our own selves, it might be easy to marginalize and even repeat them. When we see harsh consequences from bad decisions, we are more likely to think twice before doing something like them again. Perhaps it's God's way of showing you things about yourself that you didn't know or want to face before. Perhaps it's to teach you about some of the most underappreciated but greatly precious things in life, like forgiveness, should it happen. Perhaps it's to bring forth fruit of the Spirit.

It is my hope that forgiveness is found in this, but whether it is or not, may God be praised either way.

You're right. Hurting others is the absolute worst part of making a bad decision. That's something that I've learned the hard way in my time at EC. However, I've also learned that if two people truly care about each other, then the bad things will always blow over and the friendship will always remain.
