Suddenly, through the smoke and flames, a dark, running shadow came towards them, leaping over the fire, and landing in front of them.
A sleek, beautiful, velvet black panther stood before them, the brilliance of its coat shining from the orange flames. His golden eyes gleamed with familiarity and Junsu ran forward, flinging his arms around the big cat’s neck.
“Yoochun,” he whispered, “finally.”
“I’ll never be parted from you again,” Yoochun thought, and Junsu smirked. He had forgotten about Yoochun’s mind reading ability, but was then distracted by Yoochun’s urgent face in his.
He nudged Junsu affectionately and urgently, and knelt down as if to say get on. Junsu glanced back at Jaejoong, Yunho and Yoona, the heat making their skin glisten and their air supply was thinning quickly.
“Jaejoong hyung, change into an animal big enough to carry both of them!” Junsu coughed, his voice forced to be louder than the roaring flames. “I think Yoochun knows another way out!” Jaejoong nodded and in seconds he was a horse, a brown and sleek, big enough to carry two people. Yunho hoisted Yoona onto his back and climbed up, and Junsu settled onto Yoochun’s, feeling the soft fur under his arms and smiled.
“Let’s get out of here,” he whispered, and Yoochun took off, dashing around all the debris and flames. He leapt out onto the stairs leading up to the now destroyed office, and turned so he was facing an exit sign. There was a stairwell, leading upwards and hadn’t yet been touched.
Junsu kept his head down, suddenly the lack of oxygen and everything else weighing down on him. He had just enough strength to hold on with his fingers as Yoochun shoved the door open and dashed up the stairs keeping his eyes closed and feeling the air get cleaner and cleaner. Behind them he could hear Jaejoong running just as swiftly up the stairs panting heavily from the extra weight.
Suddenly they broke out into storage but Yoochun didn’t slow. He charged to the end of the hall, his sleek body moving gracefully, effortlessly. The air was a little clearer up in the storage, but the smoke was getting thicker and thicker by the second. Junsu coughed and wheezed, desperately clinging onto what little oxygen they had left. The other elevator had shut down because of emergency so Yoochun pushed through another door and there was another set of stairs. He was still moving effortlessly but Junsu could tell he was straining as well, the smoke rising too fast.
And then they were in the empty museum, racing for the doors. There wasn’t a single person in sight, and as soon as they broke out into the sunlight and Junsu inhaled deeply until he was choking. When Yoochun stopped, Junsu rolled off him and gasped, breathing in the air. Beside him, Yunho, Yoona and Jaejoong were doing the same. Yoochun turned back into a human and before Junsu could react, he pulled him into a deep kiss, knocking the breath out of Junsu even further. Junsu held on tightly-mainly because he didn’t have strength to hold himself up-and relaxed into the kiss. His heart fluttered intensely from the emotions and he didn’t realize how much he had forgotten and missed Yoochun’s soft lips until they were brushing his.
When they broke apart Yoochun held Junsu close, Junsu choking still from lack of oxygen and the passionate kiss, and Yoochun just enjoying the feeling of a warm body next to him.
Changmin came up, carrying a little Taemin who was giggling at the romantic scene. Changmin put Taemin down and the little boy raced towards Yoochun, tackling him to the ground and out of Junsu’s arms. Meanwhile, Changmin pulled out a device and was detaching the subduing devices from Yoona’s and Junsu’s necks.
“Hyung!” Taemin cried out, “are we going to be free now?”
Yoochun chuckled, nodding slightly. “Yes Taemin, we’re free.”
“And I’m free to love you again,” Yoochun thought to Junsu, startling the other man.
“Go easy on me!” Junsu pouted. “I’m not used to your mind reading and talking!”
Shrugging Yoochun put Taemin down. “Well get used to it Su, because I’m back!”
Yunho, Jaejoong and Yoona came up, and they all hugged Yoochun happily, excited to see him alive and well. Then they all explained to Junsu and Yoona how Sun was really a mutant, the one who had torched Bong-cha’s house when she was little.
“Who would have thought,” Junsu sighed, sitting on the grass, “all this time that mutant really went and infiltrated Plutotec…that’s almost very clever.”
“Except she wanted to destroy us all,” Jaejoong added grimly, “but other than that it would have been an awesome plan to carry out.”
“Well that’s all in our past now,” Yunho said, standing up, “I think we should get back…there’s some people would very much like to see you again Yoochun.”
Yoochun nodded and changed back into a panther. Jaejoong changed back into a horse, and Junsu scooped Taemin into his arms, his black wings spreading out gracefully, and spanning twenty feet across. Yoona climbed onto Yoochun’s back and they all took off.
“First one back wins!” Junsu cried out, leaping into the air. Yoochun and Jaejoong rolled their eyes, but their lips looked as though they curled up into a smile, and they sped off at the same time, with Yoona and Yunho clinging to them for dear life.
It took them less time to arrive back at the safe house than before. When Junsu touched down he let Taemin go and he darted into the bunker quickly, moments later dragging a confused and surprised Natalie with him. Onew, Key and Sunny followed along curiously. Yoochun was standing in his human body, looking more dishevelled and like a ragamuffin than before. However, when Natalie saw him she did a double take, her jaw dropping and her eyes wide. It was a long moment before she was walking closer to him, slowly, as if she was afraid he would disappear the moment she touched him. Yoochun stood still, a little uncertain of how to react. He smiled crookedly, taking in his mother’s shocked face, and felt an instant longing to have his mother there for him.
“My boy,” she whispered, resting her hand on his cheek. “And I had so much doubt about everything…and yet here you are.” Tears welled up in her eyes and she pulled him into a tight, comforting embrace, the kind that only mothers could give their children. “If you ever do that to me again I will kill you myself! You had me so worried and scared…I am so happy you’re back.”
“Mom….” Yoochun had tears running down his ash-covered face and wrapped his arms around Natalie’s small frame. “I promise it won’t ever happen again.”
“It better not. Your sister missed you so much.” She pulled away, “we all missed you.”
“Changmin!”
Jessica came darting out of the bunker, racing for the startled young man. She flung her arms around him, catching him off guard and they stumbled to the ground. Unperturbed, Jessica leaned down and pressed her lips against Changmin’s, causing the young man’s face to colour a crimson red. Natalie clamped her hands down on Taemin’s eyes, while shaking her head in disapproval and yet brimming with pride. Yunho and Jaejoong looked away awkwardly, pulling the little kids with them, while Tiffany and Yoona giggled and cheered them silently.
Yoochun and Junsu were the only ones not paying attention. They were sprawled out on the grass, holding each other warmly, and staring into each other’s eyes.
“I really didn’t think I would see you again,” Junsu admitted, knowing Yoochun could hear him.
“I always had hope that you would find me…it was the one thing that kept me going all this time.” Yoochun looked up at the blue sky and watched as the lazy clouds drifted by, playing peek-a-boo with the sun. “I went for two years without ever seeing the outside. The sun, the sky, the clouds, everything that didn’t have any real meaning to me now seems so much more incredible and breathtaking. But none of that compared to how much I missed my family, and you. You are my strength.”
“And you’re mine,” Junsu replied, kissing Yoochun lightly on the lips. “And if you don’t mind I will never, ever let go of your hand. If I have to I’ll join you in the shower.”
Yoochun laughed loudly, shaking his head. “Would you believe that I was thinking that same thing not too long ago? I never want to let go of you again because even though I know it’s all real…I still feel like if I let go and open my eyes it’ll all be just a dream.”
Junsu held Yoochun’s hand tightly and shook his head. “Well then I’ll have to prove to you that it isn’t a dream. When you wake up in the morning I’ll be holding your hand, sleeping next to you.”
Yoochun nodded and suddenly Yunho’s voice drew them out of their bubble and they sat up slowly.
“I think we should move on,” Yunho said, “the bunker is fine for now but we won’t be able to live here forever. Let’s go and start fresh someplace new.”
“Yeah!” Onew, and Key danced around happily, Sunny swinging Taemin around with her super strength. The kids were obviously thrilled, so they decided to do some research into homes that were big enough for thirteen people. Yunho hoped they were out of the suddenly crowded bunker before winter came.
“Looks like we can rest easy for now huh?” Jaejoong smiled, nudging Yunho in the side.
Shrugging Yunho looked slyly at Jaejoong. “You know…you did say that you would start listening to me sometime. So why don’t you do so now? You could be a good lover for once instead of a stubborn one.”
Jaejoong crossed his arms and pouted. “Really Yun? We went through that dangerous mission with me following your orders and you think it’s not good enough? You think I still have to be good? I thought you liked me as a rebel….”
Yunho grabbed him and drew him close, catching the other man off guard. “I love you the way you are Jae…but I think you’re still rough around the edges. Don’t worry though, I can fix that just as easily.”
And he kissed Jaejoong passionately and with a great sense of who was the more dominant in the relationship. Natalie rolled her eyes and looked at them exasperatedly.
“Seriously, you would think it was the end of the world with all this making out,” she mumbled, “this family is turning into one big…. Yah Key don’t kiss Onew! You’re too young for that! Aish what am I going to do with all you boys?”
But she was smiling, and everyone was just happy to have everyone back in their little makeshift family again.
Junsu and Yoochun kept their word about holding each other’s hands for a grand total of three days, and by then Junsu got bored so he drifted off. Yunho and Jaejoong had hunted down a house big enough for everyone to live comfortably in another country side estate, and the family had decided on moving there in a few weeks time. There had been no attacks from Plutotec and they figured that since they had taken out one of the biggest and most dedicated companies, they were a little freer to move about. Nonetheless there was always that one day they would be ambushed or their lives would be threatened, but they hoped that it wouldn’t happen for years to come.
Despite the fact that their promise didn’t last very long, every morning when Yoochun would wake up, Junsu would be still sleeping but holding his hand. He felt the warmth of the other man and felt his heart flutter with love, glad to be back with the one man he loved more than anyone else. Every morning Yoochun woke up with a smile and that dream never did shatter.
