CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Wilhelmina Harker
✧ SERIES: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
✧ HISTORY:
My written history ✧ TIMELINE: Post-movie
✧ PERSONALITY: Mina is a calm and collected individual, though some may see her as cold. Her iron will is what controls and prevents Mina's vampiric nature from showing and being dominant over her life. Mina explains her 'cold' demeanor as her being fearful of where unbridled emotion would lead. She has a sharp wit about her and is able to throw back challenging remarks and sarcasm with ease, something which is a testament to her intellect.
Mina has little patience for annoyances, as was shown with her early encounters with Mr Skinner, and is shown to hold high values and morals - though youth and sweetness aren't traits that Mina holds in a high regard, whereas self-assurity and bad manners are traits that she can't stand. As 'proper' as Mina is for her time there are elements of her that are a contrast to Victorian propriety, not least of all the fact that she is a vampire. Mina is a strong and independent woman, more so since the death of her husband, and has shown that - contrary to her appearance - she does not need a man to look after her. To the contrary, she's an intelligent woman who thinks logically, allowing little to dissuade. When angered, however, this becomes a different story.
Mina's vampiric, almost bestial, nature is a contrast to the woman who is normally presented to you. Her iron will is seen to dissolve and her thoughts - and more precisely her actions - are more aggressive and decisive, logic falling to a more animal will. It is rare that Mina is angered to such an extent, however, and generally irritations, annoyances and even light anger will be reflected back and dealt with by her wit and various caustic remarks. It is only in rare situations that the full force of her anger is seen and usually, when not requiring to feed, Mina only turns to her vampiric nature in a need for defense - or attack if that is the case.
Other than fearing what may become if her vampiric nature is left unchecked, Mina keeps her steel control over herself for another reason - although she may have now come to terms with what she has become, Mina is repulsed by what she is, particularly when it comes to feeding. Mina takes no pleasure in the killing of humans to sustain herself and does so only for necessity. It is her hope that one day she may be able to find an alternate solution. She has tried other methods before, mostly in terms of animal blood, and while they can sustain her they do not do so with as great an intensity. Between lovers, research and being approached to join the League, Mina kept herself mostly hidden - protecting others from herself; she fears seeing and feeling the same repulsion from others that she feels from herself. Mina doesn't relate well to others, a mix of her being a vampire and keeping herself hidden from others. Many things which would concern others - politics or general world views - have little impact upon Mina and her thoughts - she's seen the world change before and knows that she'll see it change many times again.
Mina's morals and values extend in many aspects. Though she is Victorian and still holds those values, certain parts of her beliefs have needed to be adapted due to her change in condition. As Mina is uncomfortable with being a vampire and does not wish to be one, her morals regarding that part of herself are the strictest part of herself - she does not wish that part of her to ever be seen by others and to be felt by herself as little as possible. When needing to feed Mina tries to prevent her urges for as long as physically possible before it becomes too hard to hold any longer. Mina doesn't take any pleasure in feeding from humans and often feeds on animals in their place, which is another reason why her research is focussed where it is. Regarding her other abilities, Mina chooses to use them only when necessary - to either protect herself or, in the case of the League, as an attack to protect others. Mina acts this way to conceal herself and to prevent her vampiric nature from becoming in control. Regarding her more traditional values, Mina's views on others (and herself in that) is that one should hold thyself to the highest regard - in such acting in a proper manner with full manners and appropriate etiquette. Mina dresses appropriately for her time, wearing long skirts or dresses and high collared shirts, with a scarf to conceal her neck. In contrast to this, Mina defies some of the more traditional beliefs - being an educated woman, studying in chemistry, and also, on occasion, wearing trousers - this shows that her beliefs towards women are also high, that they should be treated with respect but also with more equality than the times allows them.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Mina has the superhuman strength and speed that comes with being a vampire though she keeps it contained, preferring to go about fitting in as a human. When needed, generally in self defense, Mina will use these abilities. As a vampire Mina has the ability to fly, either herself or in bat-form, and can summon other bats to herself with a high pitched cry. In human form Mina's speed is that of any other human - at least that's how she prefers to keep herself in order to fit in. As a vampire her speed increases, more so with the more into her vampiric form that Mina goes (especially when flying or as a bat). Her speed and strength aide with her fighting skills as well as her agility, allowing Mina to easily clear great distances or to throw others the same distance. When flying Mina's speed is at it's quickest and her precision allows her to move easily from targets. When in full vampiric form Mina no longer looks human, her movements often too fast for her to be fully glimpsed also. Her skin takes on a more gray tone and, though a cliche, she would be described as a 'harpy'. As well this Mina possesses the vampiric healing and is invulnerable to most wounds and forms of death. In terms of injury Mina can heal almost any injury, providing that the weapon is removed - a blade through Mina's heart will kill her but only while it is still in place. Garlic and silver, while cliches regarding vampires, do not harm Mina - nor do crosses or sunlight (other than draining her abilities). There is little that can kill Mina due to her healing abilities - decapitation being one of the few methods that can, possibly even stakes. She also hasn't visibly aged since being turned. Mina is also a trained and very able chemist.

SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON: Written in Mina's journal aboard the Nautilus
We departed from Paris almost six hours ago. Regarding 'the League' there have been few problems, with the exception of Mr Skinner. So far, his uniqueness only adds to his less pleasant qualities, and he is a less capable spy than he believes. While so far there is little to go on, I'm uncertain as to whether our goal is manageable. We are fast approaching Venice, compared to alternate means of travel, and while the Nautilus is impressive in its design I'm a little weary of it; I'm unsure as to the nature of this but whatever the reason I have an uneasy feeling. I am hopeful that this feeling will pass, or if anything the cause of it will be revealed - should it persist I have no doubt that it would be of some hindrance.
Later that day: Apparently there's more of a mystery to this than we first thought, unfortunately not for any reasons as 'exciting' as some would hope. A curious powder was brought to my attention, one that I identified as magnesium phosphrous. It seemingly appears that not everyone here is as trustworthy as they seem. The powder is one that is used in photography, the product of a camera's flash. I have no doubt that the secrets that the Nautilus holds are ones which would be of interest to capture, though I am curious as to who - and perhaps for what reason - has done this, particularly at this time. Perhaps we shall see in the course of our voyage, if not sooner; there are few places to hide. Regarding Dorian it has been interesting seeing him again. While I was originally reluctant it does now seem that he may be able to help us.
And as an extra sample to show her in game,
a conversation.
✧ THIRD PERSON: Mina hadn't slept in years. She hadn't needed to sleep, the physical requirement having been removed after dying. So waking up in an unfamiliar setting, a room that was not her own nor one on the Nautilus was unsettling and frighteningly so.
"Dear God." Mina was quick to rise, to remove herself from the bed and to study the room. Her eyes studied every detail, every item and piece in the room. The colour was warm but not calming to Mina, nothing about this situation was calming. It shouldn't be possible.
She pressed a hand to her head, moving a piece of her hair away and tucking it quickly behind her ear. The light from outside - what at first glance seemed to be outside - caught Mina's eye and she turned; the light brightened the room further and fell upon Mina, warming her - if she could be warmed she would have been at least. And this stunned her, more than the impossibility of the situation already had. London.
"Oh my." London wasn't the impossibility, London was what Mina expected but the feeling that she had whilst looking out, even just by being here....
When she looked again Mina realised that it wasn't a window but simply a mirror in the room... a mirror that appeared to hold London. That she knew wasn't possible. A mirror couldn't hold a place, nor could - or should - she see something in it which wasn't the room around her. This... she couldn't describe it. She could describe how she felt, the sensations that she felt but not this. She'd seen many incredible things, those that didn't fear or revile her would call her the same, but this was incredible in a different way - in the wrong way. And now she was in it. Mina wasted no time in readying herself, leaving the room as quickly as she'd awakened - she was simply dressed, hair gently pinned back but still a testament to her Victorian sense - mostly. The feeling of worry and unease was growing quickly within her, troubling not only herself but the demon within - exciting it in its own troubling way. Stepping outside Mina kept her feelings hidden and regained her composure, hiding her fears behind her cold facade. She needed to know what was happening, and more importantly how.
