"Don't worry yourself over it, Hermione. You couldn't have known that the mirror was old enough to have been made while an amalgam of tin and mercury was still being used for silvering. In fact, if you think about it, it's good that your charms didn't take when they reacted with the mercury. Now you know how to resilver mirrors, you can add that to your growing knowledge of restoration spells, plus Mother is delighted your problem prompted me into resilvering the blue room's mirror. She's been after me for nearly a year to take care that." W.H. checked his apprentice's work now that the mirrors had been reworked. "This one is ready, too. There wasn't anything wrong with your charms that removing the mercury didn't fix."
"Thank heavens. I didn't want to disappoint my friend. I just had no idea why the spells weren't working. The set I made for myself and Draco worked perfectly after I took your suggestions and layered in the charms. Thank you for taking the time to look at these for me. I'm afraid I've put us off schedule," Hermione said collecting Cho's mirrors which were finally working the way she'd wanted.
"If you want a piece of advice, don't go making many more of these without charging for them. An ordinary pair of mirrors is hard to come by and costs a fair few Galleons. With your adaptation you could get a nice premium on top of that if you let Dervish and Bange's know you're able to do custom," W.H. suggested. Hermione was grateful for the idea.
Hermione wrapped the mirrors up separately and placed the instructions inside as well before adding a cushion charm to keep them from being damaged in transit.
Dear Cho,
I apologize for taking so long. Your mirrors are ready now. I hope you and Percy like them.
With regards from,
Hermione
Enclosed: Two mirrors and instructions
Instructions:
1. Tap mirror with wand and say either Cho Chang or Percy Weasley into the mirror (range approximately 12 inches).
2. The mated mirror will heat up to signal communication is being requested.
3. If communication is neither accepted or declined, the spell will fade on its own in five to six minutes.
4. To decline communication - tap heated mirror twice with wand (no other action is required).
5. To accept communication - tap heated mirror and say either Cho or Percy into the mirror (range approximately 12 inches).
6. Speak into the mirror (range approximately 12 inches) and you will be heard in its mate.
7. Either person can close the communication at any time once it's been opened by tapping the mirror twice with wand.
Additional information:
1. If the mirror is cracked, chipped or damaged in any way, the damaged mirror will not be able to receive verbal communication even though it will be able to send verbal communication to its mate. The mated mirror, may have some visual distortion but verbal communication will be heard clearly.
2. Repairing the damaged mirror will not restore the communication charms. They will need to be recast.
3. Do not apply additional charms or transfigure the mirrors in any way, as this is likely to disrupt the existing charms and cause the communication and/or notification charms to fail.
