I know how cats usually stick around their territories, but my main concern is the busy streets in the area (there's always some sort of roadkill, it seems). At first glance, we were almost convinced the dead cat was him, it was a terrible feeling.

Yeah, we started to worry that he ran away because we didn't love him enough or something (haha, just like a rebellious child)! It's reassuring to know that he came back relatively fast, and remembers our house as his home.
