This coming week, mme_printed and her boyfriend are heading to New Orleans for a long weekend / mini vacation.  Well-traveled though they are, they've never been to the most special American city.  It's been 3 years since I left, but I cobbled together a list of recommendations off the top of my head.  After emailing it, I decided to repost it here to see if ( Read more... )

Ooh, very good point. I forget about muffeletas because the thought of them makes me gag, but they'd probably like them.

THIS is why I did the post!

I am VERY excited to have a muffeleta. Do you think it's possible to get pork-free ones? Or is that just not done...?

This list makes me so happy/excited/hungry!

The only thing that makes me sad is that we're only there for three days (get in late Wednesday night, fly out Saturday evening), and that's simply not enough meals there!

...and a friend from work who went to Tulane told me that you can get parking validated at Harrah's if you play $10 worth of slots, so we probably WILL hit up Harrah's (only a couple blocks from the hotel) to avoid our $31 a day parking charge.

I didn't realize you were leaving Saturday night -- that's too bad! I checked, and Jean Boutte *is* playing d.b.a. on Saturday at 7. Boo. He's the best.

That makes me feel better about never having gone there, although that's what I'd heard, too. You only have brunch there if your parents are in town paying for it. (And not my parents, someone else's parents.)

Really, aside from the 25 cent martinis, why bother?

This list is AWESOME. If you don't mind, I might send it to friends and family headed to town!

Sadly, I'd take Irene's off that list. Three years ago, Irene's = one of my favorite places in NOLA. Now, Irene's = tourist trap. I guess it got written up in something famous, and they haven't been able to handle the overflow of tourists well. It's rude, crowded, kitschy, and the food's gone way downhill. I tried to go twice, and the second time I left halfway through dinner. It was that bad. I've heard the same thing from others. RIP, Irene's. :-(

I second you on d.b.a. It's also my favorite bar in town. They could also try Bar Tonique - it's in the Quarter on Rampart, and it makes the best cocktails I've ever had in my life. Try the Moscow Mule!

Who is this? Someone I know?

I think I may have heard that about Irene's, too, but I didn't want to believe it. I used to know someone who worked there.
