Out of curiosity, are Brit-pickers not a thing anymore in HP fandom? (Or really, any fandom whose canon is set in the UK?) Back when I first entered HP fandom, it was pretty de rigueur to have a Brit-picker if one weren't British. But these days I read way too many fics that use AmEng terms like "ma'am", "grocery store", "faucet", "asshole", or

omg, yes. I think this is dating us pretty severely, but I even remember that people almost always had TWO betas, one for Brit-picking. swear to you I never really wrote HP fic pretty much because I didn't want to make any awful errors like that.

Brit-pickers are pretty common in the BBC!Sherlock fandom; it's good to ask for clarification if you're not 100% sure about something.

Really? Well...I'm not a fan of Sherlock/John, which is probably the most popular ship in the fandom, so I just might not have noticed :P

Yeah, Brit-pickers are pretty common in fandoms of British-originated works. Definitely asking for clarification is a good idea.

Really? Maybe we just hang out in different sections of said fandoms. I don't ship any popular ships in HP or BBC!Sherlock, and I'd imagine that a lot of the Brit-picking goes on in those fics. I've at least noticed a lot of Americanisms in the fic I've read :(

Ooh my friend, I understand only too well, because that is exactly what I feel when people from other countries include Spanish words/phrases/plots in their fics. I commend those who at least try to write correctly, but most people just throw phrases into google translator and write whatever incoherence it spews out, not to mention half the world still thinks we live ni small villages that have never seen technology, ride on donkeys and wear sombreros. Oh, and they love to mix Spanish culture with Latin American culture.

In regards to Brit/Am English, while I do notice the differences (my school was British so I mostly studied British English, but there were also American professors, plus the American influence that comes from having the US as a neighbour), I do not mind as long as they are minimum. That is, I don't mind reading little word differences like store, faucet, sweater, but I do draw the line when the fic is an ode to American slang instead of a fic with small mistakes.

Yeah, people are ignorant, always :P I at least know that Latin American culture is different from Spanish culture ;p And that not all Mexicans live in small villages! (Although I didn't know that riding on donkeys is a Mexican stereotype!)

I definitely don't mind some words as much - sweater is one because I almost never used the word 'jumper' whilst I was in the UK, but I used 'shop' all the time and was laughed at for using 'faucet' instead of 'tap', so stuff like that tends to be more noticeable to me. :P I wish I could care as little as you seem to!

Incidentally, sometimes it's also painfully obvious when someone isn't British but has gone out of their way to use ~British~ words. Like when people insist on saying "loo" instead of bathroom, even if what they actually mean is bathroom XD
